Stellar-7

1991 SyksyVillinä nuoruusvuosinani ilmestyi kapakin nurkkaan kolikkopeli Battlezone, jossa futuristiset tankit vaihtoivat ammuksia kolmiulotteisessa maisemassa. Kone nieli markkojani tasaiseen tahtiin (olin aika huono). Vuoden parin kuluttua, kuusnelosen kultakaudella, ilmestyi Stellar-7, Battlezonen paranneltu painos jota tuli pelattua hullun lailla.

Tämän monen muunkin veteraanipelaajan lämmöllä muisteleman pelin on Dynamix kaivanut holveistaan ja ajanmukaistanut. Mustavalkoinen viivagrafiikka on vaihtunut 256-väriseen polygonigrafiikkaan, hidas kuusnelonen 25 megahertsin 386:een.

1991 SyksyIn my wild youth, a coin-op called Battlezone turned up in the corner of the pub, in which futuristic tanks traded shells across a three-dimensional landscape. The machine swallowed my markkas at a steady rate (I was pretty bad). A year or two later, in the golden age of the Commodore 64, along came Stellar-7, an improved edition of Battlezone that I ended up playing like a madman.

Dynamix has dug this game, fondly remembered by many another veteran gamer too, out of its vaults and brought it up to date. The black-and-white line graphics have given way to 256-colour polygon graphics, and the slow Commodore 64 to a 25-megahertz 386.

Space bad guy Drax has set his invasion fleet loose on Earth, and only a nerves-of-steel type equipped with a single Raven tank can beat it back. The game advances from planet to planet; you move on by eliminating enough enemies, whereupon the planet's Guardian shows up and the worst ordeal begins.

The motley rabble of riff-raff is mostly pounded with the cannon, but the invisibility field, magnetic mines plus the other add-ons come in handy. Dwindling energy can be topped up every now and then. Admittedly, for a super-tank of the future the Raven is pretty poorly kitted out and would hardly stand a chance against, say, an M1A1 Abrams, but that's par for the course.

Stellar-7 is a brisk three-dimensional shoot-'em-up that has aged amazingly little over the years.
