Wrath Of The Demon

1991 Syksy"Sinun on pelastettava Pahan Ruhtinaan käsistä prinsessa, kuninkaan tulolähteet ja puoli valtakuntaa. Aseenasi on ainoastaan onnesi, miekkasi ja bermudapöksysi". selostaa Ylimmäinen Peliguru. "Älä!", hihkaisevat pelaajat, "Tällaisesta emme ole ennen kuulleetkaan!"

Olettepas, ja satoja kertoja. Olette myöskin pelaanneet tätä samaa peliä ennenkin, sillä se on Shadow of the Beast -kopio. Beast ykkösestä on repäisty soppaan "se hieno"-skrollirutiini, muutama lemmikkihirviö ja Whittakerin samalta kuulostava taustapoppi. Kakkosen upea intro on taas ryydittänyt Wrath of the Demonin alkulevykkeen tilaa vievään esittelyyn.

Sankari on pelastustehtävissä päättänyt ratsastaa Pahan Synkälle Linnakkeelle.

Sama ilmiö on kyllä tuttu ReadySoftin aiemmista tuotoksista kuten Dragon's Lairista. Lisäksi: vaikka homma toimisi muuten hyvin, on tällainen idea hyvinkin loppuunkulutettu.

1991 Syksy"You must rescue the princess, the king's sources of income and half the kingdom from the clutches of the Prince of Evil. Your only weapons are your luck, your sword and your Bermuda shorts," explains the Supreme Game Guru. "You don't say!" the players whoop, "We've never heard of anything like this before!"

Oh yes you have, hundreds of times. You've also played this very same game before, because it's a Shadow of the Beast copy. From Beast one, "that fancy" scroll routine, a few pet monsters and background pop that sounds just like Whittaker's have been ripped out and tossed into the soup. The second game's superb intro, for its part, has gone to season the space-hogging introduction on Wrath of the Demon's first disk.

On this rescue mission the hero has decided to ride to the Dark Fortress of Evil. On the way you throw straight rights at the beasts flying at you, jump over obstacles and collect power potions, picking them up from horseback. After a night's rest the journey continues on foot through tunnels, entered, wouldn't you know it, through an opening in a tree trunk. The tunnels grow into mazes, and every so often you visit the surface, towers, a temple and various chaotic places, collecting useful magic items and thinning out the wildlife.

Along the way you run into some of WOTD's 120 different walking, hopping and flying monsters, which harmlessly sap your strength. On some of the bigger monsters a nice amount of time has been spent on the animation, and they let out nice little grunts. The fighting is done sometimes with the double-edged blade, sometimes with the knuckles. The normal, simple Barbarian moves come as easily to our hero as to the motley crew of opponents.

If you happen to go to meet your maker partway through a game you've got far into, you can carry on from the start of the level or from a saved point. That way even the kid next door will manage to play the game through.

WOTD will win over many players with its gorgeous graphics and nice sound effects, but the hardened Beast fanatic will find things to complain about. Our fair-haired, broad-shouldered barbarian doesn't always seem to understand the joystick's movements, and plays out the animation sequence of the previous move instead. Admittedly the same phenomenon is familiar from ReadySoft's earlier output, such as Dragon's Lair. Besides: even if the thing otherwise worked well, an idea like this is well and truly worn out.
