1990 KevätJos maailmasta täytyisi yksi pelityyppi hävittää, olisivat beat'em-upit varsin vahva ehdokas kliseiden toistossaan ja puuduttavassa samankaltaisuudessaan. Aina joskus kuitenkin tulee peli, joka pakottaa tappelupelien vihaajan tarkistamaan kantaansa.
Pelaaja on ammoin kuollut soturi, jonka velho herättää kuolleista pelastamaan tyttärensä nälkäisten matojen suureksi kiusaksi.
1990 KevätIf one type of game had to be wiped off the face of the earth, beat'em-ups would be a pretty strong candidate, what with their rehashed clichés and numbing sameness. Every now and then, however, along comes a game that forces a hater of fighting games to reconsider.
The player is a warrior long since dead, whom a wizard raises from the grave to rescue the wizard's daughter, much to the chagrin of the hungry worms. The warrior can punch and kick, so up to this point Altered Beast can't be bothered to offer anything all that new or interesting.
But lo and behold! By collecting the Power-Ups left behind by terminated hellhounds, the hero turns into a monster of devastating power. On level one, for instance, you get to steer a fire-breathing werewolf that mows down a screenful of monsters with a single flick of the joystick. On level two you can steer a flying dragon whose special skills include the use of electricity. A bear creature is on the menu too.
And a monster has to be tough indeed to hold its own against the classic end-of-level monsters, which, screen-sized as they are, will block the hero's progress with their eyeballs if they have to.
The graphics are exactly what a proper fighting game should have. The monsters really do go splat into pieces when you give them a shove, and the hero's habit of chopping up boulders suits the macho mood too. The animation, the use of colour and the sprite design all hit the spot, along with the roaring sound effects.
The result is a playable coin-op conversion that brings a strange sort of satisfaction. Extra bonus points go to the option for two players at once. In the preview version, though, the players couldn't be told apart, which caused certain problems.
Altered Beast's blood, gore and macho posturing lift this game far away from the dismal herd of Renegade variants.
