Shadow of the Beast II

1991 KevätSelvittyään ensimmäisessä osassa pedon varjosta takaisin ikävöimäänsä ihmishahmoon sankarin ei vielä anneta vetäytyä eläkepäiville. Harvinaisen tyylikkään elokuvaintron myötä selviää, että petolordin kostona on sankarin siskon kahmaiseminen petomaiseen käsittelyyn.

Edeltäjänsä tavoin Beast kakkonen on läimitty täyteen laadun leimoja.

Viidenkymmenen hertsin taajuudella rullaavat parallaksimaisemat nyhtävät Amigan raudasta neidin arvolle sopivia visuaalisia tehoja ja tälläkin kertaa ultrakokoisessa pakkauksessa on lahjuksena trendikäs T-paita.

1991 KevätHaving made it out of the beast's shadow in the first instalment and back into the human form he pined for, the hero is not yet allowed to retire to his pension days. An unusually stylish cinematic intro reveals that the beast lord's revenge is to snatch the hero's sister away for some beastly treatment.

Like its predecessor, Beast Two has been slapped full of seals of quality. A single glance is enough to send smoke rising from your hairline, as the fantastic teamwork of graphics and sound burns a short circuit into your optic and auditory nerves. SOTB2 isn't just the first game with new graphics, as the game system has been improved in a more versatile direction. On top of more sprawling terrain, climbing ropes and other natural additions, the game has more of an adventurous touch. The low-browed hero can even rig up a stub of a conversation with the folk he meets.

The basic ingredients are the usual sledgehammer pounding, axe flinging and other everyday chores as laid down by the science of survival. In the variety of its enemies the second Beast squashes the first, but unfortunately the same goes for their nastiness too. The difficulty level has at least doubled, at least if you measure it in inches advanced per hour.

Flailing at a creature huffing behind a stone slab with a one-pixel margin of error doesn't raise many smiles, especially when success after a dozen attempts is rewarded by a boulder weighing a ton clonking you on the head a couple of steps further on. In my opinion this sort of carry-on is more stressful than relaxing, and surely that isn't what a game is for.

If we forget the frowning, hair's-breadth-tight view of gameplay and other matters of taste, the second Beast is a collector's item worth the money and every bit the equal of its predecessor. Parallax landscapes scrolling at fifty hertz wring visual power out of the Amiga's hardware befitting the lady's station, and once again the ultra-sized box comes with a trendy T-shirt as a bribe.

Beast Two, Unreal and the like would be better suited to a museum of contemporary art, since people only buy them anyway so they can show them off to their mates, and then they sit back and wait for the magazines to publish sneaky tricks for getting through them.
