World Championship Soccer
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1991 SyksySo that the warm-up for next season can get going, and to fill the annual football game quota at the same time, Elite has released its conversion of Sega's arcade game World Championship Soccer. You can't expect anything especially new from a football game, since there isn't much room left for changes without changing the rules of the game itself.
Accordingly WCS meets the usual expectations to the letter, following the familiar formula. In the game you can choose one- or two-player mode, as well as a tournament. First a world map gets slapped in front of your mug, from which you then pick a team that has certain basic attributes partly scaled to reality. After this the menu switches to the players' names and their attribute points compared with the other players in your own team, and you pick a working eleven-strong line-up.
After that the match gets under way, except in the tournament, where the group draw is shown first. The match starts with a kick-off and, as usual, the player always controls the little fellow the arrow is pointing at, which changes to whoever is closest to the ball. There are three different kicks available: straight, topspin and backspin. Throw-ins, corner and goal kicks and a penalty shoot-out are all there too. The defence can also indulge in a spot of tackling. The control feel is good, so all the moves actually come off in practice as well.
WCS is yet another well-made, playable football game that is sure to find its buyers (Why on earth do there have to be a million versions of the same game under different names???), but we'd have managed without it. And still no Finland among the countries on offer...
