Speedball II - Brutal Deluxe

Pelikenttää on todella suurennettu: ykkösen kolme ruudullista on paisunut kahteentoista. Maalivahdit voivat nyt kunnolla vaihtaa paikkaa, eivätkä ainoastaan enää kulkea maalissa sivuttain. Reunoille on tullut myös tavaraa, maaleja tuplaava spiraalitunneli, pisteitä lisäävät pinball-tyyppiset tähdet sekä erilaiset bonusikonit.

Pelattavuus on parantunut, sillä pelihahmot todella tottelevat tikkua luotsaten rautakuulaa vastustajan puolelle. Samoin palloa lähimpänä oleva pelaaja lähtee takeltelematta liikkeelle ottamaan kuulan haltuunsa. Optimaalisen hyvät tulitusnäppäimellä suoritetut heitot ja lievä runttaus parantavat sujuvuutta.

Systeemissä on tietysti ripaus väkivaltaa. Mukavasti animoidut pelaajahahmot tyrkkivät, ruhjovat ja taklaavat lähimmäisiään. Pelaajat kestävät tietyn määrän mukilointeja, määrän ylittyessä robottilekurit kiirehtivät hakemaan haavoittuneet pois kenttää täyttämästä. Voimat, taktiikka ja nopeus perustuvat muutamiin perusominaisuuksiin, joita voidaan tarkastella pelitauoilla eri paneeleista.

Osto- ja myyntipörssi perustuvat myös perusominaisuuksiin. Aluksi ohjaamasi Brutal Deluxe -tiimi ei todellakaan ole mitenkään maailmanmestaruuskuntoinen, vaan sinun on värvättävä uusia ruotuja taistelukentälle siinä missä rahasi ja arvostelukykysi riittävät. Eri ominaisuuksien yhdistelmistä tulee loputtomasti elävyyttä peliin. Gym-paneelissa voidaan kouluttamalla (maksaa krediittiä) lisätä eri ominaisuuksia, kuten hyökkäyskykyä, heittoja, peliagressiota, taktiikantajua jne. Lisäksi voidaan ostaa lisäsuojia pelaajille.

Itse pelin viimeistely ja ohjelmointi on tuonut Bitmapin veljeskunnalle runsaasti unettomia öitä, sillä lopputulos T-O-I-M-I-I.

1991 SyksyIn 2095 the nearly hundred-year-old people's game called Speedball had become so corrupt and violent that the SPA (Speedball Players Association) decided to reorganise the game - and Speedball II was born. The new game got a new rulebook, the game mafia and its bribable referees had to make way, and the new president elected to the SB association was former player Bim Tap (hohoho!)

The game became an international draw and every match was broadcast live around the world. The weak no longer stood a chance once the money men, the teams' sponsors, came up with a player transfer market. By the year 2100 Speedball II had been split into two divisions, the pitch had been doubled and new teams had been born: the game could begin.

The classic of Amiga classics has got a sequel, but let's go over a couple of basic concepts for new Speedball players. Speedball is played by throwing and scooping up an iron ball on a pitch measuring 160 x 90 feet, with a goal at either end. You can also collect various bonuses during the game, which give you extra abilities.

And this is only where Speedball Two gets going. The game brings in all the best clichés of the previous instalment while adding to the game's smooth speed. The pitch really has been enlarged: the first one's three screenfuls have swollen to twelve. Goalkeepers can now properly move about, instead of just shuffling sideways in the goal. Stuff has appeared along the sides too: a spiral tunnel that doubles goals, pinball-style stars that add points, and various bonus icons.

Playability has improved, since the players really do obey the joystick as they pilot the iron ball into the opponent's half. Likewise, the player nearest the ball sets off without faltering to take possession of it. Optimally good throws with the fire button and a little mild roughing-up make things flow better.

The system of course has a dash of violence. The nicely animated players shove, maul and tackle their neighbours. Players can take a certain number of wallopings; once that's exceeded, robot sawbones rush in to cart the wounded off so they're not cluttering up the pitch. Strength, tactics and speed are based on a few basic attributes, which can be inspected on various panels during breaks in play.

The buying and selling market is based on the basic attributes too. At the start, the Brutal Deluxe team you control is by no means in world-championship shape; you have to recruit fresh troops for the battlefield as far as your money and judgement allow. The combinations of different attributes bring endless life to the game. In the Gym panel, training (it costs credits) lets you boost various attributes such as attacking ability, throwing, game aggression, tactical sense etc. You can also buy extra armour for the players.

Polishing and programming the game itself has cost the Bitmap brotherhood plenty of sleepless nights, because the end result W-O-R-K-S. The animation and pitch scrolling are commendable, and the sound, from the opening tune to the in-game effects, is beyond reproach. The game system, too, with its new additions and gimmicks, adds something playable to the first instalment. Like the first one, this one is at its best when two competent SB players square off against each other.
