Warlords

1991 SyksyOnce upon a time there was the mythical kingdom of Illuria, where humans, orcs, dwarves and giants shared the land's manifold fruits and grain in perfect harmony. But from the bogs of the north the Great Aittoniemi came crawling onto the stage, thundering that such a diversity of races would not be tolerated. Let the mother-in-law of all sword-bashings begin, and let its outcome decide which skin colour and which angle of the ears befit the master race.

Putting the same thing more simply, the aim is to conquer the land from under the noses of seven other hopefuls, either playing against the computer or in a noisy crowd of as many as eight people, if you can cram that many into one room.

At the start of hostilities the hero doesn't have much company to speak of, so a recruiting campaign has to be launched to scrape together troops of assorted arms. Then the hero and the army are scattered across the terrain to capture bigger and smaller strongholds, from which yet more people can be rounded up. A unit can also be ordered onto building duty to put up a castle.

Warlords is like a simplified Powermonger on a single map and without the sophisticated graphics. The troops charge from one village to the next without any strategy worth mentioning. Even the battles are the sort where the screen shows who won, and that's that. Hunting for magic weapons, having troops blessed at temples and other little nuances are an attempt to graft in some slightly loftier content.

Warlords can be described as a faceless strategy game with shallow content. It is so lightweight that it would be daft to give combat and realism separate ratings. Still, the game isn't bad, if you like this sort of thing. The game needs a meg of memory, though you'd never believe it to look at it.
