Team Suzuki

1991 SyksyAntaessani koneelle kaasua ärjähti allani oleva ratapeto ja tempoi päästäkseen jo matkaan. Jatkoin kierrosten kohottamista ja virnistykseni jäi kypärän sisään vilkaistessani sivuilla olevia kilpailijoitani. Niin, unohtakaa RVF Hondat ja Hang Onit, vektorigraafinen Team Suzuki on täällä!

Asialla on Gremlin, jonka historian sivuilta löytyvät myös Toyota GT ja Lotus Esprit, molemmat omassa luokassaan hyviä. Team Suzukissa otetaan alle Suzuki 500, voimakas, pieniruokainen ratapyörä.

Äänipuoli on kehno alkuääntelyistä lähtien. Pelin moottorinääni ei ainakaan ole ratapyörästä lähtöisin.

Team Suzuki on prätkäpelien ehdoton ykkönen ja jaksaa kiinnostaa pitkään. Prääään!

1991 SyksyAs I gave the machine some throttle, the track beast beneath me roared and strained to be off. I kept piling on the revs, and my grin stayed inside my helmet as I glanced at my rivals alongside. Yes, forget your RVF Hondas and Hang Ons, the vector-graphic Team Suzuki is here!

Behind it is Gremlin, whose pages of history also include Toyota GT and Lotus Esprit, both good in their class. In Team Suzuki you mount a Suzuki 500, a powerful track bike with a modest appetite. There are of course also the alternatives of an automatic-gearbox 125cc or the easier-to-handle 250cc, but the spirit of the game is clear: either the world championship or an embarrassing defeat.

The championship covers 16 different tracks around the world, and naturally you can practise on each one, set test times and save your own performance. More tracks are supposed to follow later. Gremlin will also give you a free disk that puts Team Suzuki into a practice mode, should your moped keep wobbling off the track too often.

The game itself is a showpiece of vector graphics; the only bitmap graphics are your own Suzuki's instrument panel and the split time/lap board. Control is by mouse, keyboard or stick. Steering with the hamster is of course the nimblest, especially if you've got a sensitive optical rat in your desk drawer. You can take in the views from the saddle to the front and the back, and also from behind, which makes life easier for an old Hang On fan. On the practice side there are also a vector zoom and a camera, both steplessly adjustable. It brings the game an immense amount of "extra fun" when you use, say, the front-upside-down camera angle. Sadly these features can't be used in the actual race.

Unrealism is brought into the game by the poor damage system, shown as a percentage at the top of the screen. The percentage goes up when you ride on the grass at the edge of the track. You can't even get the bike properly off the track: little shortcuts and rides into the screaming sea of spectators are blocked. And your fellow competitors really ought to have some nasty accident when you playfully nudge them in the side, like in Indianapolis. The sound department is poor, right from the opening noises. The game's engine sound certainly doesn't come from any track bike.

Team Suzuki is the undisputed number one of motorbike games and will keep you interested for a long time. Braaaap!
