Super Cars

Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

Super Cars

1990 SyksyKierrokset nousevat, moottorit ärjyvät. Vihreän valon syttyessä kumitassut jättävät mustat vanat radan pintaan. Korvia huumaavan metelinkin yli kuuluu rysähdys kahden auton ottaessa yhteen.

Sellaista on meno Super Carsissa.

Huomattava ero Super Sprintiin on siinä, ettei koko rataa nähdä yhdellä kertaa, vaan ruutu scrollaa pelaajan mukana. Tämä vaikeuttaa peliä, koska selviytyäkseen mutkista ja kaarteista olisi hyvä tietää mitä on edessä. Jonkin verran nykivä scrollaus ei välttämättä haittaa paitsi perfektionisteja.

Pelin aikana pelaajan korviin kantautuu tavalliset vingahdukset ja rysähdykset. Lisäksi taustalla jumputtaa kokoajan jonkinlainen ei-hyvä-eikä-huono musa.

Super Cars on ihan pelattava kehitelmä, paras näkemäni tämän tyylisuunnan peli Amigalle.

1990 SyksyThe revs rise, the engines roar. As the green light comes on, the rubber paws leave black streaks on the track surface. Even over the deafening din you can hear the crunch as two cars collide. The fibreglass bodies give way before the immense forces. What once resembled a car spins like a top towards the edge of the track.

As the G-forces build, the drivers stay in their seats only thanks to their four-point harnesses. Close contact with the concrete track barrier brings about a sudden change in the direction of spin. Finally the motion stops in the middle of the track, with the nose left pointing the wrong way.

Luckily it was only a game, and the pixel driver can still turn the car around and catch the others up. That's how things go in Super Cars. Not very realistic, but fun. There's only one rule: don't lose...

Seriously speaking, Super Cars is Gremlin's new driving game and leans pretty heavily on Super Sprint. In other words, the joystick-yanker gets a bird's-eye view and tries to steer their car around the track.

Also stuffed into the mix is the option to buy new cars and kit out your old one. Naturally this is only possible if your wallet happens to hold something more than five-penni coins. Money, in turn, can be earned by winning races or at least by placing. Unfortunately the races also run up expenses. At the very least you have to buy the petrol, and sometimes repairs are needed too.

On later levels the track is strewn with oil slicks, puddles and other nasties to torment the player. The other drivers have also had the sense to equip themselves with better wheels, and are trickier customers in general too. You get to admire Game Over if you're not in the top three or if your jalopy gives out under you.

Magnetic Fields, who were responsible for the programming, have done quite a nice job. The graphics are good and fit for purpose, although they don't exactly dazzle. A notable difference from Super Sprint is that you don't see the whole track at once; instead the screen scrolls along with the player. This makes the game harder, because to get through the bends and curves it would be good to know what's ahead. The somewhat jerky scrolling won't necessarily bother anyone except perfectionists.

During play the usual squeals and crashes reach the player's ears. On top of that, some kind of neither-good-nor-bad tune thumps away in the background the whole time. At least you won't have time to get sick of it; steering the car keeps you plenty busy.

Nor can you say a bad word about the controls. You can pull off some fancy slides if you want to, though that isn't exactly good for your lap times. From the garage you can then buy all sorts of equipment, although not all of it is exactly standard stuff. Missiles or side armour probably aren't on the shelves at every service station.

Super Cars is a perfectly playable creation, the best game in this genre I've seen on the Amiga. A two-player mode would have nicely bumped up the score and provided some enjoyable gaming moments, but it's probably too tricky to implement. You'll soon have worked your way through all nine of SC's tracks, but getting to the second or third level is a whole different story.
