Super Monaco Grand Prix

1991 SyksyFormulapeli? Taas?

Formula kulkee alttiisti Amiga-hamsteria totellen. Sijoitusnumeron pikku hiljaa pienentyessä on pelaajankin kiristettävä tahtia, ettei putoa pelistä pois.

Ajamiseen ja renkaiden pitoon vaikuttaa sää, jolla saadaan eri radat tuntumaan vieläkin erilaisemmilta.

Toteutus on Amiga-tasolla mukava, tosin muutamia seikkoja on konversiosta jäänyt pois.

1991 SyksyA Formula One game? Again? Don't moan for nothing - sure, there have been plenty. It's just that not a single good one has been made for the Amiga yet. Could this be the exception?

Super Monaco GP sounds familiar, as it has already found its way into Sega's coin-op and consoles. With its buggy's dashboard, rear-view mirror and gearbox, the game dazzled everyone with its graphics and sound effects.

GP's smoothness came as a surprise in the Amiga version. The background graphics, though no match for the MegaDrive version, keep the screen updated without dawdling. Buildings, pillars, trees and the tyre stacks along the verges flash past commendably fast. What's missing is a wealth of colour and detail.

The car readily does what the Amiga's rodent tells it. You can adjust the game's difficulty and variety by swapping the Sunday-driver automatic for a beefier gearbox beast. The game has a position number that tells you which place you need to hold in the race for the game to carry on. As the position number gradually shrinks, the player has to up the pace too, so as not to drop out of the game.

Driving and tyre grip are affected by the weather, which makes the different tracks feel even more different.

By Amiga standards the execution is pleasant, though a few things have been left out of the conversion. The lap map in the coin-op and the MegaDrive version wouldn't have done the Amiga any harm either. Otherwise your position relative to the lead car is left to guesswork. What's more, the racing team's PR girls have changed in the Amiga version. Still, you can't ask for everything.

This game won't settle the endless opinion-jabbering about the best driving game on home computers either, but it's not the worst newcomer by any means. There's still a use for the Commodore 64's PitStop II.
