SwitchBlade II

1991 SyksyKaksituhatta vuotta sitten nousi sorretun Cyberworldin viimeinen Bladeknight, Hiro, epätoivoiseen taisteluun pahaa vastaan.

Tehtävänä on löytää oikea reitti räjäyttämällä seiniin aukkoja. Vaikeaa hommassa on se, ettei tiedä mistä etsiä salakäytäviä, koska ainoastaan huoneet, joissa olet jo käynyt, näkyvät ruudussa, muut pitää löytää. Rick D:n tyyliset ansat täyttävät huoneita ja katonrajasta ampuvat laserit tekevät elämän hankalaksi. Matkaan sisältyy tietysti esineiden, rahojen ja lisävoiman hankinta.

Erilaisia lisä-aseita riittää tavallisesta rupulaserista Turrican-liekinheittimeen, suojakentistä maaliinhakeutuviin ohjuksiin. Tavaraa on helppo käyttää, mutta jokaisella on omat rajoituksensa.

Piirroksen taso pelissä on pikkutarkka.

Soundit kuulostavat alkumusiikki mukaanlukien erinomaiselta.

Monen mielenkiinto saattaa lopahtaa liian äkkiä, mikä on sääli, koska peli paranee edetessään.

1991 SyksyTwo thousand years ago, Hiro, the last Bladeknight of oppressed Cyberworld, rose up in a desperate battle against evil. Havoc, the evil emperor, was hurled from the helm of power and driven into exile. Now Havoc has returned mightier than ever. What's needed is Hiro's last living descendant and a game called Switchblade II.

This hero too, also going by the name of Hiro, sets out against ruin with nothing to rely on but morale and a Mora. Mind you, Havoc's robots scrolling in from ahead yield cash, and along the way there are of course a few handgun shops.

At first the game scrolls along like any lightweight shoot-'em-up, but once you start exploring Havoc's underworld, a vast cave complex, the game starts to get interesting.

The task is to find the right route by blasting holes in the walls. The hard part is that you don't know where to look for secret passages, because only the rooms you've already visited show up on the screen; the rest have to be found. Rick D-style traps fill the rooms, and lasers firing from up by the ceiling make life difficult. The journey of course involves picking up items, money and extra power.

There's no shortage of extra weapons, from the ordinary crummy laser to a Turrican flamethrower, from shields to homing missiles. The gear is easy to use, but each piece has its own limitations.

The drawing in the game is meticulous. Different enemies have different movement patterns, and the backgrounds are nicely pared down in a style of their own. Hiro's own movement, however, leaves a nagging feeling. The guy could perhaps have been given a few more moves.

The sounds, title music included, are excellent. During actual play there's no background tune; instead all the sounds are special effects. Different baddies have different sounds, which you can pick out from far off.

SwitchBlade II is relatively hard at first, since you get three lives and no continues. Many players may lose interest too quickly, which is a shame, because the game gets better as it goes on.
