Ruutu on jaettu vaakasuoraan suurinpiirtein puoliksi. Pelin toteutuksesta tulee lähinnä mieleen Impossible Mission, siinä määrin hienosti sankarin liikehdintä on animoitu.

1990 SyksyIn the world of the future (though perhaps not such a very distant one), oil is starting to run low. Terrorists have rigged mighty atom bombs in the oil depots around the Persian Gulf and are using them to blackmail the world. On top of that, the swine have grabbed hostages as extra collateral for their words.

You're sent in by helicopter to 'resolve' the tricky situation, but the terrorists shoot the chopper down and you splash into the water with nothing but a couple of explosives and a pistol, for which you find five magazines in your pockets. You manage to slip into the terrorists' base, and your mission is to defeat the terrorists and rescue the hostages. Piece of cake, eh?

The screen is split horizontally roughly in half. In the top half our brave terrorist-whacker goes about his adventures, and the bottom half shows his weapons, his ammo count, lift and door cards, and the number of explosives. The implementation mostly brings Impossible Mission to mind, so finely is the hero's movement animated.

Worth mentioning is the care that has gone into the character's movements with the different weapons. Firing the pistol makes the fella stand in a Miami Vice-style macho-man stance, whereas with the SPAS shotgun the man shoots unashamedly from the hip, racking the pump-action after every shot. The icing on the cake is the digitised sound effects, and especially with the shotgun the effect is something else when you make the geezer do a forward somersault and shoot: the pixel hero does a fine Impossible Mission-style somersault along the floor, ending up on his knees and racking the shotgun, complete with a digitised reloading sound. Aaah!

Nor has the violence been forgotten: realistically, opponents don't drop from the first 9 mm bullet but twitch charmingly as the bullets tear holes you could pass a tennis ball through. The shotgun naturally sends any geezer you like to the canvas with a single thunderous boom. The player can take 10 hits before dying of blood loss, and then the game is over.

When the ammo runs out, the only option is to wander around the building peeking into rooms and hoping to find more ammunition in there. Some of the rooms' doors aren't open, and their locks have to be blown to kingdom come with explosives. Eventually the hostages turn up in one room or another.

The only fault you can find with the graphics is the monotony of the backgrounds. The sprites have been drawn and animated with special care. The music is atmospheric but starts repeating itself far too soon. The sound effects are, as mentioned, digitised and extremely competent.

The playability is also spot on, although even quick reactions won't save the poor chap from a few wounds. Now and then it feels as if the figure jerking about on screen doesn't obey the joystick quickly enough, but in the end that's a small minus. The difficulty has perhaps been set just a teeny-weeny bit too hard, but with patience and diligent map-drawing, getting through the game certainly won't take very long.

If the programmers had crammed in even a little more variety, this would have been a really good game. As it is, it's 'only' a good game, for which congratulations to Magic Bytes - I think it's their first!
