Rise Of The Dragon

1991 SyksyTurmeltuneisuuden aikana hämärän syntyessä Lohikäärme nousee jälleen...

Vuosi on 2056 ja paikka terrorismin valtaama megacity Los Angeles. Uusi huume hävittää väestöä ja kylvää mutaatiota ja kuolemaa. Rikos on sairaus, mutta siihen löytyy onneksi lääke, LA:n poliisivoimista väkivaltaisten otteiden takia potkittu William 'Blade' Hunter. Kuinka ollakaan, pelaaja joutuu Bladen osaan.

Hunter herää muutaman neliön yksiössään ja muistelee eilisiltaa. Majuri Vincenzi, poliisivoimien iso kiho, käväisi tekemässä diiliä hänen murjussaan. Vincenzin tytär on kuollut huumeeseen ja Hunter palkattiin epävirallisesti ottamaan selvää miksi.

Pöydällä olevasta VidPhonesta löytyy kuvanauhaviestejä, hana tippuu keittokomerossa, Blade muistaa piilottaneensa aseensa tyynyn alle... poikamiehen arkipäivää vuonna 2056. Seuraa suihkussa käynti, sitten vaan vaatteet päälle ja dekkaroimaan. Ensin tietysti voisi käydä lepyttelemässä tyttöystävää eilisestä treffeiltä jättäytymisestä. Voisi vaikka ostaa kukkia.

Blade Hunter kulkee metrolla kaupungin osasta toiseen, hankkii tietoja ajattelevilta, persoonallisilta lähimmäisiltä, keräilee tavaraa ja joutuu aina silloin tällöin kiivaaseen toimintaan. Peli on rakennettu nerokkaalla ikkunointi - click & avot!

Auraalisuus Dragonissa on nautinto, sillä jokaisen todellisen Sierra-fanin koneen syövereistä löytyy tietysti Roland. Tietysti pääoman puutteessa voi hetken kuunnella SoundBlasteria, josta lähtee tässäkin pelissä rattoisaa piipitystä.

Peli kiehtoo elokuvamaisella toteutuksellaan ja satunnaisuudellaan. Game Overin koittaessa miettii, missä meni vikaan. Olisiko baaritiskillä lojunutta kehonrakentajaa pitänyt kohdella hivenen ystävällisemmin?

1991 SyksyIn an age of corruption, as twilight falls, the Dragon rises again...

The year is 2056 and the place is the terrorism-ridden megacity of Los Angeles. A new drug is wiping out the population and sowing mutation and death. Crime is a disease, but luckily there's a cure for it: William 'Blade' Hunter, kicked off the LA police force for his violent methods. Lo and behold, the player ends up in the role of Blade.

Hunter wakes up in his studio flat of a few square metres and thinks back to last night. Major Vincenzi, a big shot in the police force, dropped by his hovel to make a deal. Vincenzi's daughter has died from the drug, and Hunter was hired unofficially to find out why.

On the VidPhone on the table there are video messages, the tap is dripping in the kitchenette, Blade remembers hiding his gun under the pillow... a bachelor's everyday life in the year 2056. Next comes a shower, then just throw your clothes on and off you go gumshoeing. First, of course, you might pop round to placate your girlfriend over standing her up on last night's date. You could buy flowers, say.

Blade Hunter travels by subway from one part of the city to another, gets information out of thinking, characterful fellow humans, collects stuff and every now and then ends up in fierce action. The game is built on an ingenious windowing - click & voila! - technique in which you don't have to touch the keyboard during the game itself. All actions, conversation included, are handled with the little mousie, though the side-view action sequences call for a stick or the cursor keys.

The game's graphical side is simply astonishing: who has had the stamina to draw this many 256-colour pictures, and with such warmth? Nobody looks at the EGA version voluntarily. The people you meet talk with Blade in comic-book style, partly animated. The sheer amount of text is one of the plus points, and the language is easy-to-follow Yank-comic English. You can get through the game's plot without finding everything essential, though in such a way that evil gets its reward and inherits the earth.

The aurality of Dragon is a delight, since deep in the bowels of every true Sierra fan's machine there is of course a Roland. Of course, for lack of capital you can listen to the SoundBlaster for a while, which puts out cheerful beeping in this game too.

The game fascinates with its cinematic execution and its randomness. When Game Over dawns, you wonder where it all went wrong. Should the bodybuilder lounging at the bar counter have been treated a tad more kindly?
