Spirit Of Excalibur
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

Kuninkaanlinna Camelot on ilman hallitsijaa.
Karttagrafiikka tuo lähinnä mieleen vähän vanhemman War In Middle Earthin. Äänipuolella on sointuvia keskiajan soittopelejä mukavalla melodialla höystettynä, miekankalahdukset ja askeleentömähdykset tuovat omaa särmäänsä peliin.
En suosittele peliä mukavaksi välipalaksi, sillä tämän pureskeleminen vie aikansa.
1991 SyksyThese are the last days of King Arthur. The fateful battle between Mordred and Arthur has just been fought, and the kingdom of England is falling to pieces. The royal castle of Camelot is without a ruler. Fortunately the realm has one brave man: the blue-blooded Sir Constantine of York, who rides off south towards the crown. Fortunately for us, this seeker of power is mouse-controlled.
England (not Great Britain, mind you) is shown on the main map, which doesn't fit on the screen all at once but scrolls as needed. We can command the forces under our control - at first, of course, only Sir Constantine. By zooming in we can take a look at the villages and towns along the way, and we do end up settling a couple of village skirmishes. The idea is to gain companions and also as many friendly towns as possible.
Battles are fought with the mouse, controlling either the knights from a side view or, when a bigger force is involved, from further off at an angle from above. The usual terms, with parries and charges, are in use. Special items or spells can also be used to advantage in battle.
The game is basically a combination of role-playing game and strategy game. In individual situations the knights can explore, pick up items and talk, the way they would in a normal action adventure. Once in Camelot, Sir Constantine becomes King Constantine and the actual game begins: ruling the kingdom. You can send envoys, detachments of troops and even yourself to look after the kingdom's interests. You can always get down to the lowest level of command, too, to give orders to individual characters.
The game isn't quite something you'll sort out in a single evening. You can save the game and carry on expanding your sovereignty later, whenever it suits the king. Constant loading at some points deflates the atmosphere, since the normal Amiga version comes on three disks. One extra magic box in the machine helps matters. I also got to test the game as the CDTV version, where no loading problems cropped up at all.
Beautiful landscape pictures of England of old flit across the screen. The artistry pleases the eye in other respects too. The map graphics mostly bring to mind the slightly older War In Middle Earth. On the sound side there are melodious medieval instruments seasoned with a pleasant melody, and the clash of swords and thump of footsteps add their own edge to the game.
I don't recommend the game as a nice little snack, since chewing through this one takes its time.
