1990 KevätEngelsmannien kansallissankari kuningas Artturi on taas vaihteeksi muodissa. Arthurista, Pyöreän Pöydän ritareista, Merlinistä, Excaliburista, Morgainesta, Lancelotista sun muista on kirjoitettu viime aikoina nippu kirjoja, ohjattu läjä elokuvia sekä tehty pino tietokonepelejä.
Arthur edustaa Infocomin uutta linjaa eli vanha konkarikin on saanut myydä pyhät periaatteensa markkinavoimien edessä - jokaisesta paikasta on olemassa myös kuva.
1990 KevätThe Englishmen's national hero King Artturi is back in fashion again, for a change. Lately a bundle of books has been written, a heap of films directed and a stack of computer games made about Arthur, the Knights of the Round Table, Merlin, Excalibur, Morgaine, Lancelot and the rest of the gang. Not that I'm sick to death of it, but when all fantasy nowadays seems to revolve around the Artturi legend, whatever the characters happen to be called, the whole business is slowly starting to wear me down. A pity that Finland's national epic is regarded as such a holy book that nobody dares to market it. The events of the Kalevala would provide material for more than one computer game (book, film, ...).
So the story is the same old familiar thing: Excalibur has been jammed into a stone, and Artturi is supposed to pluck it out. Someone, however, has swapped not only the stone for a swordless one but also the sword for a stoneless one, so it's going badly, but let it go, and he also has to prove to Merlin that he is worthy of the king gig.
Arthur represents Infocom's new line, meaning that even the old veteran has had to sell out its sacred principles in the face of market forces - every location also has a picture. Luckily, and to the delight of the old greybeards, the game can also be made to forget its graphics screens, so the old Zorkers may breathe a sigh of relief. Besides the graphics, Arthur also draws a map as the game progresses and contains an effective help function.
In principle Arthur is indeed a perfectly decent game, especially if you like the mythology woven around old King Artturi's court. Then again, if that particular legend is already coming out of your ears, it may be time to change the channel.
