Shadow Dancer

Shadow Dancer, mestarininja Joe Mushashi, on palannut kostaakseen oppipoikansa Katon luonnollisen kuoleman.

Shadow Dancerissa on 15 tasoa, joista seitsemässä on erilainen tausta kaupungin keskustasta luoliin.

1991 Syksy"Take your mountain wolf somewhere else, this is an international airport!" says the gruff voice of the flight attendant. "This really isn't a wolf, it's a dog, and I'm not the Phantom either," says the stranger, then yanks off the cloak and reveals a ninja outfit underneath.

Shadow Dancer, master ninja Joe Mushashi, is back to avenge the natural death of his apprentice Kato. While he's at it, he also means to foil the wicked Sauros's plan to blow up a second space shuttle.

The place is crawling with enemies. Armed with nothing but his hands and feet, Joe settles his score with the terrorists. Luckily that's not quite how it is: his coat turns out to hold an unlimited supply of shuriken throwing stars, a shinobi sword and a helping of ninja magic. On top of that there's a faithful albino prairie dog to help out, which can be set on packs of opponents.

Shadow Dancer has 15 levels, seven of which have a different backdrop, ranging from the city centre to caves. At every location a gang of saboteurs has planted a different number of time bombs, which have to be defused. The bombs are always guarded by a heavily armed cluster of enemies, and at the end of every big level there's a boss.

The ninja clears his way through by jumping, running and crawling, with the dog obediently tagging along. The movement sequences look pretty, hoovered straight out of the coin-op version. Throwing stars, using magic and sending in the dog work exactly the same as in the arcade game.

There are shortcomings, though, because the sprite programming hasn't been done quite right. Even bullets can hit the ninja when they're clearly flying past a metre wide. There are a few other, smaller bugs as well.

The graphics are gripping, but the sound is a letdown, at least on the Amiga. The machine sings the same old hymn for the whole game, and the game doesn't have all the little noises of the arcade machine.

The game's idea has been used many times over, but the dog at least adds something to it. Shadow Dancer won't hold anyone's interest for long except ninja game players. I recommend the game to the latter; I'm not one of them.
