Shadow Warriors

1990 SyksyJenkkiläisestä metropoliksesta löytää melkein mitä vain, käydäänpä esimerkiksi ottamassa selvää, mikä aiheuttaa nuo nurkan takaa kuuluvat HIIAA-huudot. Mitä näenkään: Katu on täynnä nyrkkejä, jalkoja sekä hikisiä vartaloita, ja mustien savupilvien keskellä notkea varjosoturi esittelee Ninjitsu-tekniikoitaan. Tuleeko tämä kohtaus mahdollisesti Rennyn uuteen elokuvaan?

Tyypillisiin tyhjänpäiväisiin, epäpelattaviin sähläyksiin verrattuna Shadow Warriorsissa on sentään jotain ideaa. Tärkempää on katumaiseman taktinen hyödyntäminen.

Hyvää aseetonta pahoinpitelyä Shadow Warrior kuitenkin on.

1990 SyksyYou can find almost anything in a Yankee metropolis, so let's go and find out, for example, what's causing those HIIAA yells from round the corner. And what do I see: the street is full of fists, feet and sweaty bodies, and in the middle of clouds of black smoke a lithe shadow warrior is showing off Ninjitsu techniques. Could this scene be headed for Renny's new film?

Compared with the typical pointless, unplayable scrambles, Shadow Warriors at least has some kind of idea to it. For once, a beat-'em-up without a hard-to-master repertoire of moves: just a couple of jumps and a few punches and kicks, dished out with the fire button in random order. What matters more is making tactical use of the street scenery. The ninja warrior can, for example, climb onto a trash can and leap from there behind an opponent's back to kick them in the back of the head. Obstacles and walls can also be used to cover your back, leaving you free to pummel in peace any creeps who venture within arm's length. On top of that, you can search the surroundings for single-use ninja swords and other pick-me-ups. In practice this is done in the style of shoving a hundred-kilo mountain of muscle through a phone booth.

In honour of the traditions of the arcades' beat-'em-up machines the game is outrageously difficult, but to ease the pain a second ninja controlled by a friend comes charging in, and with it the fun doubles too. On the outside the game is splendid; in fact the graphics are supposed to be better than in the coin-op version, but for some reason only half of the screen is used vertically and the background doesn't even scroll. Even so, a mere couple of gangs of crooks flailing away on screen slow the game down considerably.

Censors or no censors, the action could have been given more ferocity, say, so that when you shove a hooligan in front of a car on the second level's street section, the thug's upper body would splatter across the bonnet. But maybe that would be too artistic. They could at least have put a password system in the game.

SW floats a couple of metres above the average masses, but even so it can only be recommended to beat'em up specialists, if such people even exist.

C-64: The backgrounds are polished, as are the moving characters, whose animation is smooth. Kicking the baddies has been made pleasantly easy: you just pick the direction of attack, press the fire button, and bones snap. Not everyone will like how few moves there are to choose from, but this way the atmosphere has been boosted considerably. The playability is truly first-class and you pick up the tricks quickly, without the game being too easy. To my regret I have to report that the game offers no answer to the eternal question of where all the dead criminals in games end up, since they usually just vanish from the screen to make the body count harder to keep. Maybe they just change clothes and turn up in another game? Shadow Warrior is good unarmed assault and battery all the same.
