Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. 1991 SyksyAh, tuota puolialastonten lihaksikkaiden miesten viehätystä! Joka 4.156:n toimintapelin sankari kuuluu tähän kastiin, syynä lienee ostajakunnan laskettu tarve samaistua konanklooneihin.
Oceanin pojat ovat tehneet teemasta mielenkiintoisen variaation. Sankari on näet entinen puolialaston etcetera, joka on kuitenkin muutettu pieneksi apinaksi. Eli näin jokainen voi pelata itsenään, mutta väittää että oikeasti olen lihaksikas soturi, yksi velho vain muutti minut tämmöiseksi. Ja on minulla tyttöystäväkin, mutta velho vei senkin.
Toki osaa apinoiden perustemput eli hyppimisen, kyyristymisen ja kiipeilyn. Lisäksi ex-muskelimies osaa ampua useampaan suuntaan, ja hyvästä koulutuksesta kertoo apinan taito totella joystickiä heti eikä vasta joulupyhinä. Teoria putkimies Marion kehittymisestä apinasta saa lisävahvistusta, sillä Toki osaa myös pomppia vihollisten päälle ja kerätä lisäelämiä kolikoista. Lisänä sopassa on pakolliset väli- ja loppuhirviöt sekä lisäaseet.
Toki on toki kohtalaisen tavanomainen tasohyppelypeli pohjimmiltaan, mutta pelissä viehättää erikoisesti hyvä ohjelmointi. Grafiikka, äänet ja ennenkaikkea pelattavuus yksinkertaisesti toimivat, ja joka pelillä pääsee aina sen verran eteenpäin että innostus säilyy. Klassikkoluokkaankin olisi Tokilla ollut aineksia, mutta lisäaseiden kohtalaisen luhyt käyttöaika on harmittavaa, varsinkin kun on vastatusten loppuhirviön kanssa.
Toki siis käyttää vanhaa peruskaavaa, mutta hyödyntää sentään parhaita kliseitä ja hyvin tehtynä. Lajityypin ystävät saavat mistä maksavatkin.

The Ocean boys have come up with an interesting variation on the theme. You see, the hero is a former half-naked etcetera, who has, however, been turned into a small ape. So this way everyone can play as themselves, yet claim that really I'm a muscular warrior, it's just that some wizard turned me into this. And I do have a girlfriend too, only the wizard took that as well.
Toki has mastered the basic ape tricks, namely jumping, crouching and climbing. On top of that, the ex-muscleman can shoot in several directions, and the ape's knack for obeying the joystick immediately rather than some time around Christmas is testament to a good education. The theory that Mario the plumber evolved from an ape gets further confirmation, since Toki can also bounce on enemies' heads and collect extra lives from coins. Thrown into the soup are the obligatory mid-level and end-of-level monsters, plus extra weapons.
Toki is, to be sure, a fairly run-of-the-mill platformer at heart, but what is especially appealing about the game is the good programming. The graphics, the sound and above all the playability simply work, and every game gets you just far enough that the enthusiasm lasts. Toki would even have had the makings of a classic, but the rather short lifespan of the extra weapons is a pity, especially when you're up against an end-of-level monster.
So Toki uses the old basic formula, but at least it makes use of the best clichés, and well executed at that. Fans of the genre get their money's worth.
