Secret Weapons Of Luftwaffe

Vihdoinkin! Secret Weaponsia on jokainen Battle Of Britainin veteraani odottanut innosta täristen, ja SWOTL lunastaa lupaukset.

Ameriikan ihmeet

B-17:n aseistuksena on kymmenisen .50 kaliiberin raskasta konekivääriä kahdeksassa paikassa. Jokaisella paikalla on muuten oma grafiikkansa. Kun pommittajat lentävät vähintään kolmen koneen tiiviissä muodostelmassa, niin kyllä on hauskaa lentää saksalaishävittäjällä suoraan tulimyrskyyn. BOBissa perunapeltoja myllänneet ilahtuvat varmaan B-17:n Norden-pommitähtäimestä, jolla saa pommit varsin hyvin sinne minne ne kuuluvatkin, jopa 23 tuhannen metrin korkeudesta.

Amerikkalaisten tehtävät koostuvat pääasiassa matalahyökkäyksistä, saattokeikoista ja pommituslennoista.

Saksan salat

Pääasiallinen ongelma saksalaisissa koneissa on niiden nopeus. Reagointiaika pumpata lyijyä pommikoneeseen on parin sekunnin luokkaa, ja toiseksi suihkukoneet menevät tosi herkästi rikki. Aidossa elämässä muun muassa yksi Me-163:n lentäjä kirjaimellisesti suli penkkiinsä, kun polttoaineputket repesivät ja suihkuttivat nesteet pilotin päälle.

Saksalaiskoneissa on varsin mielenkiintoista aseistusta, kuten raketteja, ilmasta-ilmaan-pommeja ja todella uskomaton ylöspäin laukeva raketti, jonka laukaisee pommikoneen varjo. Saksalaiset lentäjät tekevät matalahyökkäyksiä, mutta pääasiassa yrittävät tiputtaa pommikoneita.

Toteutunut unelma

Teknisesti Secret Weapons Of The Luftwaffe on varsinaista mannaa taivaasta.

Battle Of Britainissa koneen vahingoittuminen kostautui vain heikompina lento-ominaisuuksina. Nyt on elämä kovempaa. Osuman saanut moottori saattaa alkaa roiskia öljyä ja kun öljy loppuu, alkaa motti savuta. Sokkolento keskellä Saksaa on mielenkiintoinen, joskin usein kohtalokas kokemus.

Valittevasti Lucasfilm on unohtanut sylje moottoreiden päälle-napin kontrolleistaan.

Secret Weaponsissa on uskomaton tunnelma.

AdLib-äänipuoli on varsin kiva. PC-piippi on PC-piippi.

Lisäosat

Totuttuun tapaan SWOTLissa on tehtäväkehitin, jolla voi rakentaa omia kustomoituja tehtäviä. Uutuutena on Tour Of Duty -optio, jossa pitää selvitä määrätystä määrästä tehtäviä hengissä.

Kampanjapeli on tietysti mukana. Amerikkalaisten pitää luhistaa Luftwaffe ja Saksan teollisuus, Saksan pitää kehittää salaisia aseita ja tehdä Liittoutuneiden aikeet tyhjäksi. BOBin yksinkertainen kampanjointi on kasvanut lähes täysimittaiseksi strategiapeliksi.

Yksinkertaisesti Secret Weapons Of The Luftwaffe on tämän hetken paras ja monipuolisin lentosimulaattori. Muut valmistajat saisivat ottaa oppia.

1991 SyksyBandits at ten o'clock! I swing my heavy .50 calibre machine guns round the right way, but what the heck? What were those? Two bat-like contraptions zip past before I can even squeeze the trigger, and alongside us Lieutenant Knightlore's B-17 is torn to shreds. On the next pass the second wonder-machine is ripped apart in the middle of a lead storm from five bombers, but the captain reports that number four engine is kaput, the right main tank is leaking and the tail gunner is dead. Still, the Enterprise has no choice but to press on towards Berlin, because a lone bomber is a dead bomber.

At last! Every Battle Of Britain veteran has been waiting for Secret Weapons, trembling with excitement, and SWOTL delivers on its promises.

Wonders of Ameriikka

Of the American aircraft you get to fly the P-47 Thunderbolt (C and D versions) and P-51 Mustang (B, C and D versions) fighters, plus the B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bomber (F and G).

The B-17 is in fact the only real bomber in this game, since the Germans didn't do an awful lot of bombing in the final stages of the war. The B-17 is armed with ten or so heavy .50 calibre machine guns in eight positions. Each position has its own graphics, by the way. When the bombers fly in a tight formation of at least three aircraft, it's great fun flying a German fighter straight into the firestorm. Those who ploughed up potato fields in BOB will surely be delighted by the B-17's Norden bombsight, which puts the bombs pretty well where they belong, even from a height of 23 thousand metres.

The Americans' missions consist mainly of low-level attacks, escort jobs and bombing runs.

Germany's Secrets

As the name says, the real spice of the game is the German aircraft. The Me-109G and FW-190 prop planes will probably be familiar; the jet and rocket planes less so.

The Me-163 Komet is a tiny rocket plane whose peculiarities include a droppable undercarriage and a measly 4 - 8 minutes of fuel, after which the plane is a glider. The Me-262, on the other hand, was deadly effective and could have affected the end of the war had it been brought into service earlier, and if Hitler had kept his bright ideas to himself. The Gotha Go-229 fighter-bomber never flew a combat mission. This flying wing would, incidentally, have been the world's first stealth aircraft.

The main problem with the German aircraft is their speed. The reaction time for pumping lead into a bomber is on the order of a couple of seconds, and secondly, the jets break down really easily. In real life, among other things, one Me-163 pilot literally melted into his seat when the fuel lines burst and sprayed the fluids over him.

The German aircraft carry some rather interesting armament, such as rockets, air-to-air bombs and a truly incredible upward-firing rocket that is set off by a bomber's shadow. The German pilots do make low-level attacks, but mostly they try to bring down bombers.

A Dream Come True

Technically, Secret Weapons Of The Luftwaffe is real manna from heaven. Graphically, the improvements consist of more detailed terrain and superbly exploited 256-colour VGA graphics (though EGA is quite OK too). I could swear the artificial intelligence has been beefed up considerably, because for someone who downed 12 planes with a shot-up 110, my SWOTL kill lists are much shorter, and you have to work hard for those too. The bomber's automatic gunners even manage to shoot down enemy planes instead of just wasting ammo. Hardcore flyboys will probably be pleased by the advanced flight mode, in which the rudder is controlled separately and the aircraft's characteristics, such as maximum dive speed, are realistic.

In Battle Of Britain, damage to your aircraft only cost you poorer flight characteristics. Now life is harsher. An engine that's taken a hit may start spraying oil, and when the oil runs out the motor starts smoking. Flying blind in the middle of Germany is an interesting, if often fatal, experience.

Damage to the bomber's engines, or thrashing them too hard, takes its revenge in overheating, smoking and catching fire. In theory the B-17 can fly on just one engine (it has four), but coaxing a damaged aircraft home takes skill and keeping a beady eye on the gauges. Unfortunately, Lucasfilm has left a spit-on-the-engines button out of its controls.

The fuel tanks, too, rise to become stars of the survival show. To increase their range the Yank planes had to have extra tanks bolted on, but since a hit on an extra tank sets off a proper fireworks display, you should of course drop them as soon as the German aircraft come into view. And then you may well run out of juice. Nastier still is a hit on the main fuel tank, because that one can't be dropped, and guess what happens when a tracer round hits the petrol...

Secret Weapons has an incredible atmosphere. The battles are really intense, and the sprite-based, incredibly lively graphics support it beautifully. Seen from a B-17's gun turret, a German attack into the middle of the formation is like something out of a movie, and when nine bombers each drop six bombs right in the middle of the target, the sight could be spliced straight into a documentary film.

The AdLib sound side is rather nice. The machine guns sound a bit feeble, but the engine rumbles and howls are good, the flak bursts are nicely muffled, and there are nice little touches like the whine of the hydraulics when you fiddle with the undercarriage and flaps. The PC beeper is the PC beeper.

Extras

As is customary, SWOTL has a mission builder with which you can put together your own customised missions. New is the Tour Of Duty option, in which you have to survive a set number of missions alive.

The campaign game is of course included. The Americans must crush the Luftwaffe and German industry, while Germany must develop secret weapons and thwart the Allies' plans. BOB's simple campaigning has grown into an almost full-scale strategy game.

The video recorder has been improved with a few new options and the ability to record, if you wish, an entire mission. This does take some fiddling with the camera cache, but it can be done.

The manual is thicker than before and full of information that is both interesting and essential. You can get airborne by reading the thin supplement.

Nothing Comes Free

As you might guess, the demands on your games machine are considerable. If you don't have extra memory, SWOTL requires 581K of free base memory and then loads the other graphics, such as the side and rear views, from disk. SWOTL will gratefully take 560K of expanded memory, into which it sucks the graphics for instant loading, plus added graphical detail. At worst it eats 3.6 megabytes of hard disk space.

The machine has to be at least a 286, and preferably a nippy one. In fact, I chose to fly on a 25 megahertz 386 at the second-lowest detail level, at which everything ran smoothly.

Crying won't help; the unfortunate fact is that in the States a 386/VGA can be had for pocket money, so the share of heavy megagames a la King Quest V-Wing Commander-SWOTL is going to grow steadily. And if the standard stays at this level, then welcome!

Simply put, Secret Weapons Of The Luftwaffe is the best and most versatile flight simulator of the moment. Other manufacturers could learn a thing or two.
