Their Finest Hour: Battle Of Britain

1990 SyksyEin Thunk, zwei thunk! Ju-88 vapisee osumista. 'Missä helvetissä hävittäjäpellet taas kuppaavat', jyrähtää kiihtynyt kapteeni. Tangemeren lentokenttä on onneksi hollilla, joten kylmähermoinen von Nirchofen painaa nokan syöksyyn.

Saksa aloitti taistelun Englannista tarkoituksenaan pyyhkiä RAF:n taivaalta, jotta saksalaiset maihinnousujoukot pääsisivät rantautumaan. Kourallinen brittilentäjiä kuitenkin pisti Luftwaffea päihin niin ansiokkaasti ettei invaasio Englantiin koskaan toteutunut.

Jo Battlehawks 1942:ssa Lucasfilm esitteli spritepohjaisen simutekniikkansa hyvin tuloksin, ja BOB on vielä jättihyppäys eteenpäin. Ei ole perusteetonta puhua kolmanne sukupolven simulaattorista.

RAF:n koneista on edustettuna legendaariset Hurricane ja Spitfire, joten tehtävät koostuvat yksinomaan pommittajien ja hävittäjien torjunnasta. Luftwaffen koneista löytyykin valikoimaa: kaunis hävittäjä Messerscmitt Bf-109, kaksipaikkainen Me-110, kuuluisa Ju-87 Stuka, raskaat pommikoneet He-110 ja Do-17-Z sekä syöksypommitukseenkin kykenevä Ju-88. Lisätietoja haluavalle sisältää BOB paksun opuksen aiheesta taistelu Englannista.

BOB on erittäin tyydyttävä peli.

Varsinainen liikkuva grafiikka on 1942:n tavoin toteutettu spritegrafiikalla, jonka etu on todella uskottava taistelunäkymä. Varsinkin ilmataisteluissa poistettu maisema aiheuttaa huomattavaa nopeudenlisää. Aikaa säästää myös peliajan nopeutus.

Koneissa on kamera, jolla saa purkitettua muutman minuutin taistelua.

Huvittavaa muuten, että Lucasfilm on mätkäissyt nimeksi Their Finest Hour, tarkoittaen nimenomaan brittilentäjiä. Lyönpä miljuunan vetoa, että Iso-Britannian pelipoikia lukuunottamatta lähes jokainen liittyy Luftwaffen riveihin.

Their Finest Hour on sen luokan ohjelma, että Lucasfilmin seuraavaa, Secret Weapons of Luftwaffea jää odottamaan ykkösluokan kaipauksella.

1990 SyksyEin Thunk, zwei thunk! The Ju-88 shudders from the hits. 'Where the hell are those fighter clowns skiving off this time', thunders the worked-up captain. Luckily Tangemere airfield is close at hand, so the cool-headed von Nirchofen shoves the nose into a dive. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, bombs away and nose up. 'Chew on that, Engländer Schwein!' The tail gunner reports two direct hits and two misses.

And it's rumbling again. One Spit takes it in the wing and the pilot bails out, as the other one too trails a streak of smoke behind it. But then our own kite is only held together by chewing gum any more either. It's still a minute to the Channel, and on the right a formation of three Hurricanes comes into view. As a small mercy an escort fighter appears out of nowhere and stays circling around us. Now there's a chance of seeing France, since at the controls of the plane is none other than Nidolf Nitler himself.

Germany began the Battle of Britain intending to wipe the RAF from the skies, so that German landing forces could get ashore. A handful of British pilots, however, knocked the Luftwaffe about the head so creditably that the invasion of England never came to pass.

Already in Battlehawks 1942 Lucasfilm showed off its sprite-based sim technique with good results, and BOB is a giant leap further forward still. It's not unfounded to speak of a third-generation simulator.

Of the RAF's planes, the legendary Hurricane and Spitfire are represented, so the missions consist solely of intercepting bombers and fighters. The Luftwaffe's planes, on the other hand, come in quite a selection: the beautiful fighter Messerscmitt Bf-109, the two-seater Me-110, the famous Ju-87 Stuka, the heavy bombers He-110 and Do-17-Z, and the Ju-88, which can even manage dive-bombing. For anyone wanting more background, BOB includes a thick tome on the subject of the Battle of Britain.

BOB is an extremely satisfying game. The dogfights are intense, and it sure gives you a thrill when pieces fly off the plane on the receiving end of your machine-gun burst and the smoke spreads. The tiny parachutists add to the sense of reality.

In every plane bigger than a single-seater you can set both the pilot and the gunners to automatic, although the bit-pilot only keeps the plane flying straight. A splendid idea is the pilot pool, from which you can, for example, pick your own 109 ace to fly the escort fighter if the skills of the default dimwits don't satisfy you. Amateurs can even skip landing at the airfield.

Every plane has its very own cockpit and gun-position graphics (except on half-meg machines). The actual moving graphics are done with sprites, as in 1942, the advantage of which is a really convincing combat view. The drawbacks are a slight sluggishness (though BOB is several times faster than BH) and enormous memory consumption, thanks to which I wouldn't recommend BOB for half-meg setups. Y'see, part of the graphics and all of the sound get left out. Since the sound is pretty good (the MG rattle could be improved), that takes the edge off the atmosphere. The terrain is vector graphics, and you can adjust the amount of detail if you want. Especially in dogfights, switching off the scenery gives a considerable boost in speed. Speeding up game time saves time as well.

The planes carry a camera with which you can get a few minutes of combat in the can. The camera can not only drift freely about the sky but also lock onto the tail of any plane or bomb, or into its cockpit, or show a bombing raid from the target's angle. You can also immortalise your battles on disk and show them to your mates.

Once you've gnawed your way through the ready-made missions, you can build more yourself with the Mission Builder. BOB even has a campaign mode, in which you can fight the Battle of Britain from either side's point of view. Your own success is reflected in the whole war.

Amusing, by the way, that Lucasfilm has slapped on the title Their Finest Hour, meaning specifically the British pilots. I'll bet you a cool million that, apart from Great Britain's gamer boys, nearly everyone will join the ranks of the Luftwaffe.

Their Finest Hour is a program of such class that it leaves you awaiting Lucasfilm's next one, Secret Weapons of Luftwaffe, with first-class longing.
