Predator 2

1991 SyksyToimituksen tunnetusti suuri esikuva Arnold Schwarzenegger huseerasi aikoinaan onnistuneesti viidakossa ottaen yhteen avaruudesta tulleen metsästäjän kanssa. Kymmenen vuotta myöhemmin toinen Predator saapuu Los Angelesiin elokuvan kakkososassa. Filmi sijoittuu silminnäkijätodistusten mukaan luokkaan toisen luokan kakkososat eli Robo/Robo II ja Die Hard/Die Hard II.

Pelinä Predator 2 on lähes susi, tarkemmin määriteltynä Operaatio Susi. Harrigan liikehtii etualalla ääriviivakuviona ja Uzi laulaa. Kentältä saa lisää ammuksia, parempia aseita ja lisää energiaa. Viattomat ohikulkijat voidaan myös laskea jonkinlaiseksi uudistukseksi. Säälimättömiä miehiä harmittaa liiallisen ohikulkijalahtauksen aiheuttamana gameover.

No entäs itse herra Predator?

Predatorin Amiga-version grafiikassa on hauskoja oivalluksia. Metrotunnelissa vilistää juna ohi ja valoihin osuminen aiheuttaa pimennyksen, hotelliosuudessa voi ainakin yhdessä kohdassa tuhota kalustoa. Muuten animaatio on sellaista hyvää keskitasoa.

Predator 2 on hauska joskin aivan liian vaikea OpWolf-klooni.

Vaikeustaso on huomattavasti inhimillisempi, kuten pitääkin, sillä kuusnepa on joystick-ohjattu. Tietysti suurin määrä graafisia kikkailuja on jäänyt pois, mutta muuten grafiikka on ihan onnistunutta. Musiikki on aika kamalaa, kuulanruiskun rutkutus pesee Amigan mennen tullen.

Aivan samalla tavalla on käynyt Predator 2:lle.

Stephen Hopkins (A Nightmare on Elm Street V) on ohjannut visuaalisesti ajoittain erittäin näyttävän elokuvan, mutta plussat jäävätkin sitten suurinpiirtein siihen.

Valaistus on hieno, kuten kuvauskin.

1991 SyksyArnold Schwarzenegger, famously the editorial team's great role model, once rampaged successfully through the jungle, locking horns with a hunter from outer space. Ten years later a second Predator arrives in Los Angeles in the film's part two. According to eyewitness testimony, the film belongs in the category of second-rate part twos, i.e. Robo/Robo II and Die Hard/Die Hard II.

As a game, Predator 2 is very nearly a dog - Operation Wolf, to be more precise. Harrigan moves about in the foreground as an outline figure and the Uzi sings. You can pick up more ammo, better weapons and more energy along the level. The innocent passers-by can also be counted as some sort of innovation. Merciless types will be annoyed by the game over brought on by excessive passer-by slaughter.

So what about Mr Predator himself? At first you can't even see him; only a scream testifies to a hit, and the charge at you that follows testifies to his annoyance. The Predator is actually useful to begin with, because it moves about in the background killing the bad guys. At the end you then take on a biiig pack of predators and whoops! Surprisingly, the game is finished, without any great showy closing praise or the like.

The graphics of Predator's Amiga version contain some fun touches. In the subway tunnel a train whizzes past and hitting the lights causes a blackout, and in the hotel section you can smash up the furniture in at least one spot. Otherwise the animation is of a good middling standard.

The sound score crumbles above all because of that olde besetting sin. The music is good, but there are no effects while it plays. And if you choose the effects, the Amazing Croaking Rifle mostly makes you laugh, and the effects are on the feeble side anyway. I don't know what the general view is, but in games proper sound effects matter more than musical warbling.

Predator 2 is a fun, if far too difficult, OpWolf clone. The levels are overlong, and the gun fodder comes at you with such intensity that only those who can finish OpWolf with their eyes shut stand a tolerable chance. Or else those who know what to type with the pause on. The links with the film are occasional, but who expects anything else these days.

The C64 version actually draws the longer straw. The difficulty level is considerably more humane, as it should be, since on the C-64 it's joystick-controlled. Naturally most of the graphical trickery has been left out, but otherwise the graphics are quite successful. The music is pretty awful, but the rattle of the bullet-squirter beats the Amiga's hands down.

By way of a plug: the American comics publisher Dark Horse publishes a Predator comic, which is very good. So when the X-variations no longer excite you, the world is full of alternatives.

PS. You get infinite lives on the Amiga by putting the pause on and typ

THE FILM

Directed by: Stephen Hopkins

Uh-oh, the Die Hard 2 effect in full swing! What this means is that when Finland's own Renny Harlin took the reins of Die Hard 2, nobody knew what to expect. The first reports from the shooting locations and the stars' interviews promised a mighty action flick, but how did it turn out? For all its action, Die Hard 2 was an unbelievably dull and stupid film. Exactly the same thing has happened to Predator 2.

Stephen Hopkins (A Nightmare on Elm Street V) has directed a film that is at times visually very striking, but that's roughly where the pluses end. The biggest mistake, first of all, was making a sequel to Predator. The second mistake was making the sequel without Schwarzenegger. The third mistake was throwing the fifty-something, beer-bellied Danny Glover (Lethal Weapon I and II) into the lead role. Sure, the anti-hero line cultivated by Die Hard I is OK sometimes, but not in this film.

Plot-wise Predator 2 is part one all over again, but in a different setting. There is roughly as much shooting and violence as in the first one, but done rather tamely. The lighting is great, as is the camerawork. Glover can certainly act, which can't be said of the supporting cast. Breathing life into the wretched dialogue would have taken actors of an entirely different calibre.

The director has been diligently watching Cameron's Aliens, as proven by the slaughterhouse scene, a near-direct clone of the atmosphere processor scene in Aliens. An amusing reference to that same film can also be found in the final stretch of the movie, where the Predator's trophy cabinet is shown. The Predator has collected the skulls of the species it has encountered, and lo and behold, among them there's also an Alien's skull. No wonder there are rumours of a film called Aliens vs. Predators, especially since Dark Horse published a comic of the same name.

Predator 2 never reaches the level of part one, but you'd still much rather watch it than some Julia Roberts drivel or brainless Police Academy clones.
