Predator

1988Predator perustuu kaikkien idolin Arnold Schwarzeneggerin elokuvaan. Majuri Dutch Schaefer ja hänen erikoisjoukkonsa saavat tehtäväkseen pelastaa muutaman panttivangin sissijoukon käsistä. Viidakosta alkaa löytyä nyljettyjä ihmisiä ja panttivangitkaan eivät olleet niitä mitä piti. Mistä on kysymys?

Grafiikka on erinomaista. Jopa kuusnelosessa lönköttelevän spriten tunnistaa vaivattomasti isoksi A:ksi, ja pelissä on hyvin vangittu elokuvan klaustrofobinen tunnelma.

Yksityiskohtiin on kiitettävästi kiinnitetty huomiota.

1988Predator is based on the film starring everybody's idol, Arnold Schwarzenegger. Major Dutch Schaefer and his special forces unit are given the job of rescuing a few hostages from the hands of a guerrilla band. Skinned people start turning up in the jungle, and the hostages weren't what they were supposed to be either. What's going on? That remains an eternal riddle, because a strange creature starts thinning out Schaefer's unit. At the end, of course, Dutch and the Predator take each other's measure.

The age of miracles is not over. Not only does Predator follow the plot of the film, it is also a very good game. Predator The Movie was bloody, and so, thank the Lord, is the computer version.

The game starts with an excess of guerrilla-killing, until little by little it turns into a hybrid of beat'em up and arcade adventure. Arnie has three hand grenades and a machine gun with limited ammo at his disposal. When his magazine runs dry, Arnold can switch weapons if he stumbles upon the body of a fallen comrade-in-arms. Unfortunately these also seem to serve as bait for the Predator, because the sight of a laser weapon immediately shows up on the scene, and once again the number one of character acting has to run or die. The graphics are excellent. Even on the Commodore 64 the lumbering sprite is effortlessly recognisable as the big A, and the game captures the film's claustrophobic atmosphere very well.

Commendable attention has been paid to detail. When Arnie lets the machine gun sing, both man and gun judder convincingly. Blood flies from whatever the hail of bullets hits, and the body doesn't vanish anywhere but stays on the ground in the middle of a pool of blood. The outer-space hunter's infrared vision also follows the film's visual example, and the parallax scrolling of the jungle background (complete with skinned bodies hanging from the trees) is flawless.

There's nothing terribly original in Pretador, but the well-judged difficulty and the superb implementation make it the most satisfying violent game since the legendary Nemesis The Warlock. An excellent game of an excellent film; it'll be fun to see whether this one gets banned in Germany.
