Might & Magic III: The Isles Of Terra

Liikkuminen sujuu joko Bard's Talen tyyliin hiirtä maisemaruudulla heilutettaessa, mikä on huono systeemi, tai näppäimistöä takoen, mikä taas on hyvä systeemi. Ergonomisesti M&M on kohtalaisen ankea ja lähempänä Bard's Talea kuin Eye/Dungeonmasteria. Varsinkin valikoiden nahkea ilmestyminen kiintolevyltä rassaa.

Muutenkin Might & Magic III on 3D-roolipeliksi vanhahtava. Grafiikka on pikkaisen liian räikeää, eikä efektipuolikaan edusta mitään alansa huippua.

Taistelu sujuu nopeasti, joskin vuoroperiaatteella.

Sekin on epänormimaista.

Joulun Dungeon Master -klooniryöppyä odotellessa Isles of Terra saa ajan kulumaan kuin siivillä.

1991 SyksyMight & Magic is a highly popular role-playing series abroad, even though it has gone largely unnoticed in Finland.

As for the plot, apparently somebody called Shelem is the evil force that needs destroying. Beyond that the storyline hasn't become any clearer yet, even though the hours of play have been piling up something fierce. Might & Magic III, you see, is not exactly a small game.

The party is made up of six characters who faithfully exploit every fantasy-game cliché. There's room for two hirelings, or for characters who just barge in and tag along. The class restrictions have been nicked pretty faithfully from Dungeons & Dragon. I see no reason why a wizard shouldn't be able to use a sword if they feel like it, even if they then don't hit much of anything with it. And what skill does it take to keep a suit of armour on, I'd just like to know.

At first glance Isles of Terra looks like a Dungeon Master clone, but in fact it's evolutionarily closer to the Bard's Tales, though thank the Lord in a more pleasant form. Combat isn't dull scrolling through text against monsters that teleport in out of thin air, but brisk DM-style action. Among the happy surprises was leaving a town surrounded by orc hordes, which really was surrounded by orc hordes.

Movement works either Bard's Tale style, by waving the mouse around on the view window, which is a bad system, or by pounding the keyboard, which on the other hand is a good system. Ergonomically M&M is fairly dismal and closer to Bard's Tale than to Eye/Dungeonmaster. The sluggish way the menus crawl up off the hard disk is especially grating.

In other ways too, Might & Magic III is old-fashioned for a 3D role-playing game. Interaction is done by bumping into things. When you see a chest you have to bump into it and answer yes when the game asks whether you want to open the chest. Items exist only as text. The graphics are a tad too garish, and the effects side doesn't represent anything like the best in the business either.

Combat is quick, though turn-based. You can shoot at monsters from a distance with bows, and among other things combat features such a fine invention as legging it, which lets a single character take to their heels while the others see to the slaughter.

The magic system is based on spell points, with some spells needing extra power from gems. Thankfully there are no D&D-style level restrictions, but the spellcasting system is needlessly clunky. The spells themselves include useless junk spells, basic essentials for staying alive and everything in between. The manual doesn't say a word about what the spells do; you have to go and fetch the facts from the guilds.

Among the good points are a good skill system and items that apparently work on a random basis. With a bit of luck you might find, say, a poison-protecting, armour-class-lowering, poison-cloud-firing suit of leather armour. The armour class system itself is confusing, because whereas in every other game the pluses and minuses are relative (the basic version of a shield being +0, say), in M&M you're only told how it affects your armour class (basic shield +4). The bigger the AC, the better. That goes against the norm too. The merchants identify items, but a Steel Shield, for instance, is afterwards still a steel shield and not a steel shield +6, which would be preferable. You get to draw up the weapon and armour tables yourself.

A miserable junk game, then? Anything but: despite its patina, I got well and truly stuck in the world of Might & Magic. A big reason is probably that there's always something to do somewhere or some place due to be explored, so getting bored is pretty difficult. Admittedly the quests in the game do rack the brain, at times a bit too much. There's just the right amount of combat, and being fast-paced it never even gets the chance to become boring.

While waiting for the Christmas deluge of Dungeon Master clones, Isles of Terra makes the time fly. If they can be bothered to file the system up to date in part four, that's when the fun will really kick off.
