Demon's Winter

Ennen pelin alkua luodaan omat hahmot.

Pahempi moka pelissä on levyaseman toiminta. SSI on kertakaikkiaan ylittänyt itsensä 64:n levytoiminnoissa. Onneksi Amigassa on nämä puutteet korjattu.

Nämä puutteet unohtaen DM on melko pelattava.

Taikuus on tärkeää kuten lähes kaikissa roolipeleissä. DM:ssä se esiintyy eri riimukirjoitusten muodossa. On tulen riimuja, jääriimuja sun muuta, kullakin tyypillä on omat taikansa.

Kuten aina SSI:n peleissä, ohjekirja on erinomainen.

Demon's Winter on täydellisen sopiva vasta-alkajille, helpompaa roolipeliä tuskin lieneekään.

1989 SyksyWhen the world is a nice place to live, you can be sure someone will come along and spoil the day. Then it's time to put together a heroic band to destroy the evil - which this time is not Nikademus. The Demon-God Malifon has cast a spell that plunged the world into permanent winter and turned all the seas to blood. Malifon's minions are working to free their master from prison so that Malifon can rule the world.

Once again five heroes must set off trekking through a hostile environment, fight whoever they come across and generally scour every place from top to bottom to find the necessary clues and spells with which Malifon can be imprisoned for all eternity and the curse lifted.

The manual makes Demon's Winter seem a little more interesting than you might imagine from the background. Although the framework is the same as in almost every role-playing game, the world is a touch livelier and more mysterious. The game type is standard, though, meaning you fight trolls, demons and other riff-raff, so in this respect there's no difference from other games of its kind.

Before the game starts you create your own characters. You can choose from five races (the old standards, from humans to trolls) and ten professions (standards again, plus a couple of new ones such as Scholar, Monk and Visionary). Each race has its own average attribute values, and you can try to improve a character's own attributes twice. Finally two skills are chosen for each character - and fighters had better have weapon skill, or else it's curtains.

The game itself works nicely, but the chosen colour shades are completely off. Dark blue text doesn't go with a black screen. A worse blunder in the game is the disk drive handling. SSI has really outdone itself with the 64's disk routines. You could almost swear there's no turbo of any kind in use. Although going into a town takes about 10 seconds, loading a battle takes a whole minute and 23 seconds, which is a deadly slow crawl. At times you start to think the whole wretched thing has crashed. Better not even say much about the graphics, since they're that dreadful. Fortunately these shortcomings have been fixed on the Amiga.

Forgetting these shortcomings, DM is fairly playable. Wandering about outdoors is passable, and the towns have been done excellently. There are marketplaces, churches, pubs, inns and, in the coastal towns, even a harbour. At the market square you can buy equipment, haggle over prices or sell off old stuff.

Magic is important, as in nearly every role-playing game. In DM it appears in the form of different runic scripts. There are fire runes, ice runes and what have you, and each type has its own spells. Magic items, weapons and what have you are drifting about all over the place. Nor should the gods be forgotten - there are 10 of them, each with its own body of worshippers. When trouble strikes, a faithful servant can pray to their lord, and maybe the god will hear and help.

As always with SSI's games, the manual is excellent. Even it is missing something, though: in the 64 version you have to make a backup of the (B) disk, where the characters and the game situation are saved, otherwise playing is impossible.

A good game otherwise, but the loading takes too long. If you have the stamina and can be bothered to wait, there's no problem, but otherwise... Demon's Winter is perfectly suited to beginners; you'd be hard pushed to find an easier role-playing game.
