Might and Magic Book One: Secret of the Inner Sanctum

Onneksi Might and Magic kuuluu sinne parempaan päähän, vaikkei vedäkään vertoja Ultima V:n ja Bard's Tale III:n kaltaisille namipaloille.

Might and Magic sijoittuu klassiseen fantasiamaailmaan, jossa on kaupunkeja, maaseutua ja luolastoja.

Hahmot eivät kuitenkaan välttämättä kuole, kun he kaatuvat. Outoa sinänsä, sillä yleensä yhden yön uni ei riitä palauttamaan hit pointseja nollasta maksimiin. Hmmmmm.

Might and Magic vaikuttaakin enemmän juonensa monipuolisuudella kuin teknisellä toteutuksellaan.

1989 KevätRole-playing games are shoving their way onto the market these days at such a rate that it's downright frightening. Luckily Might and Magic belongs at the better end, even if it can't hold a candle to tasty morsels like Ultima V and Bard's Tale III.

Might and Magic is set in a classic fantasy world with towns, countryside and dungeons. Everything has been done with the same maze technique, which most closely resembles the city part of Alternate Reality. Even the trees in the forests stand in straight rows.

Combat is handled on a text screen, but fairly realistically. Characters at the back are relatively safe and can cast spells or use, say, a bow in peace. If the fighters fall, the enemies get through the line of defence. Using a marching order when moving through the dungeons also adds to the realism.

Characters don't necessarily die when they fall, though. Odd in itself, since one night's sleep usually isn't enough to restore hit points from zero to maximum. Hmmmmm.

So Might and Magic impresses more with the richness of its plot than with its technical execution. Cryptic messages and other mysteries take real brainwork to crack. To a role-playing fanatic this one can still be recommended, but I wouldn't settle for it as my only role-playing game. The best thing in the whole game is its small but comprehensive manual, which many another outfit in the business could take a lesson from.
