Gateway To The Savage Frontier
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1991 SyksyTuskin oli tieto tullut, että Pool of Radiancen aloittama jatkumo päättyy Pool of Darknesissa, niin uusi Forgotten Realms -jatkumo alkoi pelillä Gateway to the Savage Frontier.
Deja Vu:ta on tiedossa reippaasti, sillä GTTSF on hyvin Pool-mainen.
1991 SyksyHardly had word come that the series begun by Pool of Radiance would end with Pool of Darknes when a new Forgotten Realms series got under way with Gateway to the Savage Frontier.
Expect a hefty dose of Deja Vu, since GTTSF is very Pool-like. There's a gratifying abundance of little quests, with the main plot advancing on the side. Characters start at level 2 on average, so for the first time in ages the battles consist of whacking bottom-of-the-barrel monsters with an appalling miss rate. A nice change, actually, when you're used to a single mage sweeping away an entire horde of monsters with one fireball. Now you at least break a sweat.
Character development is cut short again: barely a fifth of the game was behind me when the Cleric had already hit the end of its development. Priests and mages stall at level 6, rangers at level 7, and the rest make it to level 8. Naturally there are no new spells, though at least there are a few new monsters.
The system hasn't been overhauled much, though at least you can now get straight into a character's inventory. Sound and graphics have been improved somewhat.
A few things are overdue for a fix: the graphics depicting the player's characters haven't progressed an inch, and the player characters look primitive compared with everybody else. The Modify option could be dropped: neither I nor any of the other dishonest types transfer our characters from the tabletop game - we just configure our characters to maximum stats.
Same goes for the level option: why bash tough monsters when on novice level the game goes more lightly and the XP losses aren't anything much either? In my own defence, the random encounters would otherwise drag on until Judgement Day.
Frankly, it would have been logical to give this line of AD&D games a proper overhaul in honour of the new series. Then again, these are massive hits: why change a formula that sells?
