AD & D: Champions Of Krynn

1990 SyksyYet another new line appears in the Advanced Dungeons & Dragons series, as Dragonlance pushes its way into territory more serious than joystick-wrenching. I'm not allowed to recount the plot, but before evil gets its just deserts the word 'dragon' starts to leave a bad taste in the mouth.

Naturally COK won't accept a party from any other game, set as it is in its own Draconlance continuum. As a nice touch, by the way, you bump into names familiar from the action series here and there. At first there are slight problems adjusting your attitude, when you have to switch from clobbering giants with superheroes to pestering puny dung beetles with a team that couldn't hit a barn door unless someone held its hand.

COK uses a game system almost identical to the previous 'serious' AD&D games. So, to recap briefly: usually you see a 3D view of the surrounding landscape, when a conflict breaks out you switch to a 'man by man' tactical combat screen, and roaming around Krynn is done on a map one screen in size. The functions are found in menus. There's some small improvement here and there, but AD&D doesn't seem to be progressing in giant leaps the way the Ultimas do.

The graphics are of the familiar standard without any major surprises. Hopefully menu selection by initial letter will make its nest in the C-64 version too; it's a great deal nippier than fumbling about with the stick. For some strange reason, by the way, Champions of Krynn demands a whole 1 megabyte of the Amiga.

As a minor annoyance, there's one spell level fewer than in COAB, i.e. only up to level four. If I'm going to grouse about something else as well, the combat system could be developed in a more tactical direction. Even the doorway of every little room is still at least three men wide, which can hardly be natural.

Those who have ground their way through Pool and Curse will surely fall for this latest brew as well. At least it's nicer to bump off new monsters than old, all-too-familiar ones.
