Bill Elliott's NASCAR Challenge

1991 SyksyDistinctive Software on jälleen kerran vauhdissa. Test Drivet, 4D Sports: Driving ja Mario Andretti's Racing Challenge todistavat jotain ohjelmoijaryhmän autokuumeesta. Nyt ovat vuorossa NASCAR-autot. Ehkäpä kaikkien aikojen paras NASCAR-kuljettaja Bill Elliott on suostunut varmasti tukevasta rahatukosta antamaan nimensä pelin kanteen. Toivottavasti hän ei joudu katumaan sitä.

NASCAR on Suomessa tuiki tuntematon autourheilun laji. Sitä ajetaan lasikuitukorisilla autoilla yleensä ovaalin muotoisilla radoilla: Nopeudet liikkuvat normaalisti 300 km/h paremmalla puolella. Elliott on hurauttanut ennätyksen, 350 km/h. Kun nopeudet ovat tuota luokkaa, ovat kolarit yleensä aika massiivisia. Osittain siksi NASCAR on Amerikassa erittäin suosittua.

Pelattavuus on todella omituinen, sillä vaikka joystickin tempaisee rajusti toiseen reunaan, ratti kääntyy tyyliin isoäiti matkalla ostoskeskukseen vauhdilla 15 km/h. Ensin auto siis aliohjautuu, sitten se renkaat ulvoen singahtaa toivottuun suuntaan. Siinä vaiheessa rattia alkaa tietenkin tempoa toiseen suuntaan ja sama ilmiö toistuu. Laidasta laitaan kurvailu tuntuu BENCessä olevan pakollista.

Älkää turhaan tuhlatko rahojanne Bill Elliott's NASCAR Challengeen, ovaaliradoilla Indianapolis 500 on edelleen kunkku.

1991 SyksyDistinctive Software is on a roll once again. The Test Drives, 4D Sports: Driving and Mario Andretti's Racing Challenge testify to something about this programming team's car fever. Now it's the turn of NASCAR cars. Bill Elliott, perhaps the best NASCAR driver of all time, has agreed, surely for a hefty wad of cash, to lend his name to the game's cover. Let's hope he won't come to regret it.

In Finland NASCAR is a completely unknown branch of motor sport. It's raced in fibreglass-bodied cars, usually on oval-shaped tracks: speeds normally sit on the high side of 300 km/h. Elliott has zipped to the record, 350 km/h. When speeds are in that class, the crashes tend to be pretty massive. That's partly why NASCAR is extremely popular in America. Personally I don't get what's so great about circling an oval track for 500 laps with your foot to the floor, when an overtake happens maybe once every 10 laps. Granted, NASCAR demands iron fitness and nerves of iron from its drivers, and overtaking is surely an art form in itself, but for a Finnish rally fanatic (which I am not) NASCAR is an extremely boring sport.

As a game, BENC can easily be described with that same word. Even though the game features, for example, Watkins Glen, which resembles the human intestines, you get bored with the game far too quickly and easily. Tuning the car between qualifying and the race is nothing short of a joke. All right, the graphics look nice, and the other cars are actually very fine indeed, but the background graphics don't dazzle and the music isn't exactly staggering either. The playability is really peculiar, because even if you yank the joystick hard over to one side, the steering wheel turns like a granny on her way to the shopping centre at 15 km/h. So first the car understeers, then, tyres howling, it shoots off in the desired direction. At that point you naturally start yanking the wheel the other way, and the same thing happens all over again. Swerving from side to side seems to be compulsory in BENC.

Don't go wasting your money on Bill Elliott's NASCAR Challenge; on oval tracks, Indianapolis 500 is still king.
