Mario Andretti's Racing Challenge

Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

Mario Andretti's Racing Challenge

1991 SyksyOnko Mario-vesseli loikannut Nintendosta PC:lle?

Kuuluisan Andretti-suvun jäsen Mario on aikojen saatossa ajanut kilpaa lähes jokaisessa mahdollisessa autoluokassa.

Näin ruudun päivitysnopeus on saatu siedettävän nopeaksi hitaissakin PC:issä.

Mario Andretti's Racing Challenge on täynnä jo ennen nähtyä tekniikkaa, eikä sinänsä aiheuta ohhoh-reaktioita.

1991 SyksyHas that Mario rascal defected from Nintendo to the PC? What on earth is Mario doing behind the wheel of a racing car? Everyone who loathes that little idiot in overalls to the utmost can breathe a sigh of relief. Distinctive Software, the outfit lurking behind the Test Drive trilogy, has made a car game about Mario Andretti's career as commissioned work for Electronic Arts, big car fans that they are.

A member of the famous Andretti clan, Mario has over the years raced in almost every car class imaginable. To give others a shot at the same, Electronic Arts' game lets the player pick whichever of several different cars takes their fancy. This only works as practice, though. When the player enters the world of motor racing in dead earnest, they have to climb up through the classes by skill and by the sweat of their brow.

The player starts the game by landing a sponsor, who hands over a grant of 20,000 dollars. That sum is enough to join the Sprint car class. These are ridiculous-looking contraptions that don't really want to accelerate, even though they top out at around 170 km/h. Driving one takes a remarkable amount of skill, though you wouldn't think it. Sprints usually race on dirt tracks, and the car is forever trying to shove its tail round to the front. Sliding through the bends knocks your speed down hard, and wrong racing lines soon come back to bite you in the shape of last place. Winning a race naturally earns you money, and once you've scraped together enough you can move up to the next class. And so you progress from one class to the next, the goal being the Indy car of the truly hard-core hotshots.

Distinctive Software, usually a purveyor of extremely meticulous vector graphics, has for some reason settled for a plainer finish this time. As a result the screen update rate has been made tolerably quick even on slow PCs. You can certainly recognise the other cars bumping around the track, but the polygon count has been kept bewilderingly low, especially considering the kind of work we've seen in, say, 4D Sports-Driving. It's hard to say anything else about the implementation; once you've seen one car game like this, you've seen them all.

The replay feature, by now practically compulsory, is naturally present and lets you watch your own driving from every possible and even nearly impossible camera angle.

Mario Andretti's Racing Challenge is packed with technology we've seen before, and as such doesn't trigger any oh-wow reactions. It's by no means a bad game, but in my opinion at least, it lacks that really hard kick.
