Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge

1991 KevätViimeaikaisissa autopeleissä on tyydytty yrittämään siirtää kolikkopelin tehoa kotimikron kuoriin, eivätkä nämä riisutut mallit ole paljon toisistaan eronneet. Kunnon Pole Position -tyyppistä rallipeliä haikaileva on joutunut kiduttamaan Pitstop II:llä varustettua kuusnelostaan.

Toisaalta taas peliin on siirretty Lotuksen tekniset ominaisuudet, lukuunottamatta kiihtyvyyttä, jota on paranneltu.

Grafiikka on todella onnistunutta. Vauhti pysyy nopeana, vaikka ruudulla olisi kamaa kasakaupalla.

Ainoa miinus koko pelissä on ratojen harjoittelumahdollisuuden puuttuminen. Plussiin verrattuna se paljoa paina: Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge on tyhmästä nimestään huolimatta tämäntyyppisten autopelien paras.

1991 KevätRecent car games have contented themselves with trying to squeeze the punch of a coin-op into a home micro's casing, and these stripped-down models haven't differed much from one another. Anyone pining for a proper Pole Position-type racing game has had to torture their Pitstop II-equipped Commodore 64.

Then Magnetic Fields came up with a set of simple but effective ideas, and Pitstop II met, if not its conqueror, then at least its equal. Just like back in the day, two players can go head to head at the same time, and there's even a pit stop. At the pits you only get extra petrol. A pity, since implementing tyre wear would have made Lotus a practically perfect game.

Then again, the technical characteristics of the Lotus have been carried over into the game, with the exception of the acceleration, which has been improved. A clever invention is the option to choose manual or automatic gears: the lazy shifter is punished with higher fuel consumption plus lower acceleration and top speed.

The graphics are a real success. The pace stays fast even when there's stuff on the screen by the heap. The sprite-based 3D works like a dream, and as far as the hills go, only Stunt Car Racer grabs you harder in the pit of the stomach.

Something else that pleased me no end is that the other cars don't pop into view at random; instead, twenty other Lotuses buzz around the track with minds of their own. The player has to make it into the top 10 to be allowed to continue.

The only minus in the whole game is the lack of any way to practise the tracks. Compared to the plusses it doesn't weigh much: despite its stupid name, Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge is the best of this type of car game.
