Toyota Celica GT Rally

Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

Toyota Celica GT Rally

1991 KevätGremlin is obviously aiming to become the number one name in car games, and so far it's looking pretty promising, too. Lotus was good, so is this brand-new Toyota, and presumably the moped game dropping next will be proper stuff as well.

The Toyota rally's 30 tracks are spread across three countries: England, Mexico and - well, what do you know - Finland. The picture of Finland is a slippery track lined with spruces and seen through thick falling snow, i.e. not very far from the truth. And Juha Kankkunen even turns up on the high score lists.

The most interesting innovation is the co-driver, who calls out the next bend in clear English, as in 'Tight left, then easy right'. Before the race you go through the track and give the co-driver instructions on what to say. It pays to be careful: mixing up right and left can make for a nasty surprise in the driving stage.

TCGR is no jolly 'stick in hand, foot to the floor' game but a simulation-style rally for car-game professionals. Even staying on the track isn't easy for an amateur. Help is at hand, too. The steering can be set to three levels of sensitivity, the gears come in manual or automatic sorts, and the real hotshots can reverse the steering wheel (what's the fun in that?). Nothing wrong with the implementation either. The vector graphics update commendably briskly and the co-driver's comments are properly sampled.

The game has one minus, and it comes from the absence of other cars. Then again, being a great enemy of sport, I have no idea whether the real thing has them either. In any case, if rallying is your cup of tea, TCGR ought to please.
