Lombard RAC Rally
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1989 KevätTiukka mutka vasempaan ja sataa oikeaan on tunnelman nimi Mandarin Softwaren rallisimulaatiossa. Kyseessä on ihka oikea Englannin RAC-ralli kaikkine pikataipaleineen.
Turbo Trax on edelleen vuoden paras kilpa-ajosimulaattori.
1989 KevätTight bend left and a hundred right - that's the atmosphere in a nutshell in Mandarin Software's rally simulation. This is the genuine English RAC Rally, special stages and all. The player sits safely in the back seat of a Ford Cosworth and tries to steer it as best they can, even if the rally driver in the front seat does block part of the view. The navigator's pace notes are just a glance away, and your progress shows up on the route map as an advancing blue line.
The driving technique follows the familiar routine of jiggling the joystick and rowing through the gears. The game is hard: beating the target times on a special stage means going flat out, and the map seems about as trustworthy as descriptions of the Loch Ness monster. The only way to get through the various routes with your honour intact is to drive them until you know them by heart.
To take part in the rally itself you have to get through all five stages and finish in the top three at least once. That'll keep you sweating away for a good while as you try to reach the finish in one piece. Often you can only guess where the road goes, so you end up spending time out in the fields with your car like some farmer. Trees and other bigger obstacles bring the journey to a brief halt, and the windscreen goes a delicate "tinkle".
In driving feel, Lombard Rallye resembles the famous Test Drive, but the rally simulation is a more varied product with more staying power. Apart from the mountain sections, the routes seem far too difficult at first. The game's demo mode snaps on at the slightest excuse, and at least in the Amiga version the only way out of it is to reboot the machine.
Lombard Rallye earns its place in a car game fanatic's archives, but those looking for easy fun need not bother. Turbo Trax is still the best racing simulator of the year.
