Torvak the Warrior

1991 KevätPikkurillin kokoinen, itsensä kokoista lyöntivälinettä roikottava muskelimöykky löytyy pelien conanisoidun kliseeraamatun sivulta yksi. Nimellä ei ole väliä, kunhan takaliitteenä on 'The Warrior' tai 'The Barbarian'. Pikselilootaan manaamisen syynä on yleensä jokin hirmu kauhea onnettomuus, kuten suloisten kotikontujen ylle langennut epätoivon varjo inhan Necromancerin rellestäessä vapaana 600 ruudun kokoisessa epätodellisuudessa.

Vihollisen lähestyessä on ensinnäkin otettava reilusti ennakkoa, jotta pikkumacho ehtii reagoida napin painallukseen, ja lisäksi on huomioitava aseen heilauttamiseen kuluva aika. Sitten loikataan pikaisesti karkuun, jotta ehtisi valmistella seuraavaa iskua.

1991 KevätThe little-finger-sized lump of muscle dangling a bludgeon as big as himself can be found on page one of gaming's Conanised cliché bible. The name doesn't matter, as long as it's followed by 'The Warrior' or 'The Barbarian'. The reason for conjuring him into the pixel box is usually some awfully terrible calamity, such as a shadow of despair falling over the sweet old homestead while the nasty Necromancer runs riot, loose in an unreality 600 screens in size.

The feature list forcibly wrung out on the back of the box tells you everything about the game. Deemed worthy of one of its five points, for example, is the mention that treasures earn you extra points. A few weapons and a bit of magic as a bonus, and that was the game's entire offering.

Torvak has exactly the same flaw as the conversion of Dynamite Dux, which if I remember rightly was also Core's handiwork. When an enemy approaches, you first have to act well in advance so that the little macho man has time to react to the button press, and on top of that you have to allow for the time it takes to swing the weapon. Then you hop swiftly out of the way so as to have time to wind up the next blow. I've run into all sorts of idiotic design decisions, but this one takes the cake.

And what sense is there in an inchworm wriggling along the ground being a deadly opponent for a barbarian a thousand times more massive? Not very encouraging either is the fact that there's no noticeable improvement in killing power, even though the weapon changes from axe to sword, from sword to sledgehammer and so forth. With magic the baddies do at least go cold at a brisker pace.

The neat-ish but lukewarm-feeling standard artwork, together with the supermarket plink-plonk whimpering away in the background, creates such a characterless atmosphere that it's enough to make you cry. Amid all this whining, let it be said that TTW is poor but not among the poorest. With slightly slicker controls it could even have made a decent basic bash-'em-up.
