Simulcra

Ihme kyllä Graftgold on malttanut pitää vaikeustason aisoissa - ilmeisesti Microprosen painostuksesta.

Ensimmäisen minuutin aikana on nähnyt kaiken näkemisen arvoisen. Kun yllätykset puuttuvat, niin pelaajat puutuvat. Jotta totuus ei valitusten seassa unohtuisi: suorasukaisen räiskinnän sarjassa Simulcra on ehdottomasti toiseksi parasta, mitä markkinoilla tällä hetkellä on tarjolla - ykkösenä on Paradroid 90, joten Graftgoldilla on kunnioitettava kaksoisjohto.

1991 KevätThe cyber-techno-bullshit intro, all about viruses that have nested in a combat simulator steered by cortex chips implanted in the brain, suggests a puzzle game along the lines of Interphase, but if you had to look for a model, the ones that come to mind first are Virus and Conqueror.

In other words, this 3D blaster worked up by Graftgold belongs to the subgroup in which the craft you steer is shown from the outside. Compared with various muddled attempts, Simulcra has got the idea working tolerably: none of Virus's fixed viewing angle, nor Thunderstrike's camera trailing along behind, but a landscape that rotates smoothly in step with the craft.

The manual's waffling does its level best to hide the game's crystal-clear basic idea - no wonder, when the publisher is a branch office of Microprose. The simulated assault craft assaults its way across the platforms of a simulated battlefield floating on thin air, its primary targets being the generators that keep the energy walls up.

The secondary option is to scrap laser towers, mini-tanks and gliders, and to loot the modules they leave behind for reinforcements such as missiles and mapping devices. You don't have to sweep the mazes along the surface; you can also yank the craft up to glide on its wings. If, on the other hand, you want to improve your protection and prevent unintended take-offs, the wings can be folded right in.

The game has plenty of little technical niceties like these. Generally speaking, life has been made commendably easier; for example, you can tear around the platforms quite carelessly, since there's no fear of falling into the void.

The highly polished impression is underlined by how well the graphics work. Their speed clears, with the bar wobbling, the critical threshold at which the typically dawdling 3D chugging turns into action. A good achievement, considering that the objects have shading that softly follows the light source.

Amazingly, Graftgold has managed to restrain itself and keep the difficulty level in check - evidently under pressure from Microprose. The imaginary Grim Reaper spends most of his time having a siesta, so much so that Simulcra could even be faulted for being all too lax. My first session with the game stretched on endlessly, and in the end I had to switch the machine off before a single game over. Whether that is a good or a bad trait is a matter of taste, but at least you can conclude from it that the game absolutely should have had passwords.

Besides the compulsory starting from level one, Simulcra is gnawed at by the action game's original sin number two. Within the first minute you have seen everything worth seeing. When the surprises go missing, the players go numb. So that the truth doesn't get lost among the complaints: in the straightforward blasting class, Simulcra is definitely the second-best thing on the market at the moment - number one is Paradroid 90, so Graftgold holds a respectable one-two lead.
