Paradroid 90
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

Parhaimmillaan grafiikka on droidien lähipotreteissa. Äänipuoli muistuttaa yllättävän paljon alkuperäistä kuusnelosmaisten luritusten ja pulputusten kopioidessa esikuvan tunnelmaa.
Paradroidin vanhassa ja uudessa versiossa on täsmälleen sama vika: henki on enimmäkseen hiuskarvan varassa. Vähemmästäkin turhautuu, mutta jotenkin maagisesti Braybrook on kääntänyt senkin edukseen.
1991 KevätPoor Braybrook must have had a rough time of it, with a few million fans launching a letter bombardment demanding a 16-bit version of Paradroid. If you don't know Paradroid, well, that's a nasty gap in your education, seeing as it was considered in its day one of the most ingenious games in the world.
You have been entrusted with retaking the freighter U.S.F Paradroid, since it has been trampled under the feet of a droid invasion. In practice the clean-up proceeds by two parallel tactics. The more straightforward of them is zapping the droids out of your way, but with gunplay alone your life is far too fragile.
The subtler method is capturing droids by bumping up against their side and moving into a subgame where you compete for circuit connections. The idea is to get more than half the wires under your control, whereupon the droid is under your command and at the same time you get the use of its weapon, speed and armour. The tougher the customer, the harder it is to capture, so typical of the game is raising your droid status by making haste slowly. The droid, whizzing from deck to deck by lift, is supported by service points for energy top-ups and by terminals where you can leaf through floor plans and other data.
Compared with the original version, the most striking difference is that scrolling is restricted to the vertical, but that's a side issue. Of the individual new ideas, the obstacles sprinkled around the levels deserve a mention: they provide cover from fire for only a few shots. The careless can even blast the energy chargers to smithereens. There's been progress in the baddies' intelligence too; for example, in between the fighting they go off to top up their energy, and one sniper in particular likes to fire from a doorway or from round a corner.
In appearance the game is typical Graftgold, meaning hyper-tidy pixel-polishing, but measured by 90s criteria rather characterless. The graphics are at their best in the close-up portraits of the droids. The sound side is surprisingly reminiscent of the original, with Commodore 64-style warbles and burbles copying the atmosphere of the model.
The old and new versions of Paradroid have exactly the same flaw: your life mostly hangs by a hair. You'd get frustrated over less, but somehow, magically, Braybrook has turned even that into an asset.
