Rogue Trooper

Voivottelut sikseen, on sankarihahmoa sentään yritetty hyödyntää täysipainoisesti.

1991 Kevät2000 AD's comics have been getting some heavy recycling. The game versions of Judge Dredd and Rogue Trooper are already on their second round, and they certainly deserve it too, if only they could capture at least as much of the spirit of the original stories as the Commodore 64's Nemesis the Warlock did.

An adapted Murphy's law fits these games: 'The better the subject, the bigger the disappointment'. Once again the ideas people have frolicked through the fence where it's lowest, or rotted away altogether. The result is a characterless contraption in which you run back and forth on flat ground and now and then change floors by lift. The game does stand out from the crowd to the extent that, for a change, the hero's skin colour is blue.

Enough moaning; at least an effort has been made to make full use of the hero character. The mohawked mutant's first job is to find the comrades-in-arms stored on biochips, Gunner, Bagman and Helm, in other words the kit. The Norts polluting Nu-Earth are swept out of the way as a matter of routine, and on the side you solve simple puzzles, a few of which contain some clever touches. For example, you can neatly get round a retina scan with a detached head.

In keeping with the spirit of the comic, the equipment stays alert, which in practice has been implemented so that the icon representing a biochip starts flashing if the buddy spots something interesting. Surely it would have been more effective, though, to pop a speech bubble on the side of the piece of kit.

The middle section of the game, meanwhile, is Space Harrier-style flying over a chequered floor scrolling in three dimensions, which doesn't look especially interesting.

A dark-toned background would have suited the subject better than a garishly coloured toilet-tile landscape. The hero's anatomy isn't quite right either. The swipes with the rifle butt and the knife look good, but the walk is like an orang-utan's and the jumping like a kangaroo with a bad back. And it's a strange thing that such a good subject hasn't inspired some proper background music.

Apart from the fine opening and closing strips, the game doesn't do its original enough justice, but it does at least have playability and a suitable difficulty level. You also feel you're getting more for your money, since the manual has the first two Rogue Trooper stories printed in it, drawn by the master Dave Gibbons.
