Rick Dangerous 2

Rickin seikkailut jakautuvat pelissä viiteen kokonaisuuteen, joista jokaista voi pelata erikseen, poikkeuksena ainoastaan viimeinen taso, jota vartioi painonvartijoiden ykköskohde, The Fat Man (Nagasakiin pudotettu atomipommi oli saman niminen!).

Taustat ja animaatio on kaikessa yksinkertaisuudessaan toimivaa, vaikka onhan parin tason taustoihin kiinnitetty enemmän huomiota (viimeinen osuus sisältää tavallista enemmän pieniä graafisia vitsejä).

On vaikeampaa arvioida kuinka kauan kiinnostus peliä kohtaan pysyy yllä, ottaen huomioon pelin helppouden, mutta ohjelmointituotteena RD 2 on ainakin esikuvansa veroinen.

1991 KevätWell then, this of course couldn't be avoided: Rick D. is off adventuring again! The first instalment of Rick's adventures was quite a nice, if not very varied, game. On the back of its reasonable success the sequel has finally been completed, but has the wait been worth the trouble? Will Rick's tracksuit bottoms split in a public place, and will Rick become an object of national shame? We decided to find out.

In the game Rick's adventures are split into five sections, each of which can be played separately, the only exception being the last level, which is guarded by the number one target of weight watchers everywhere, The Fat Man (the atom bomb dropped on Nagasaki had the same name!). After each level the player is rewarded with an extra life and a restocked arsenal.

The idea is the same as before: solve the individual problems that stop Rick's adventure from continuing. The problems are now somewhat more elaborate, though, and there are considerably more levers of various kinds to operate than in the first instalment, which on its own already makes the sequel worth playing.

Rick moves really splendidly and responds well to the player's control inputs, so at least the game can't be faulted on playability. The backgrounds and animation work in all their simplicity, although a couple of levels have had more attention paid to their backgrounds (the last section contains more little graphical jokes than usual). The game also gets suitably harder, although generally speaking the problems have been made too easy to solve. Not that it matters - easy-ish games are fun to play every now and then.

Rick needn't be ashamed of existing, and good design and a successful reuse of an old idea see to that. It's harder to judge how long interest in the game will hold up, given how easy it is, but as a piece of programming RD 2 is at least a match for its predecessor. There's nothing fundamentally wrong with making sequels, as long as the software houses remember to change more than just the packaging each time. And Rick's tracksuit bottoms didn't even split.
