Prince of Persia

Realismissa piileekin varsin arvostelijakohtainen ongelma. Hahmo nimittäin reagoi normaalipelejä hitaammin juuri realistisen animoinnin ansiosta, eli jarruttaa juoksun jälkeen ja menee kyykkyyn ennen hyppämistä. Vaikkei näppikseen tarvitse koskea, on joystickin joka suunta tulitusnappuloineen ladattu toiminnoilla, joten peli vaatii harjoittelua ettei sankari makaa piikkien lävistämänä joka hetki. POP on siis varsin vaikea, vaikka kärsivällinen pelaaja saakin sitten iloa koko rahan edestä.

1991 KevätWhen you go a-courting, it pays to forget the soppy stuff and, instead of prattling on about love, hand out an hour's thinking time with the death sentence that follows it. 'Chew on that, princess, or I'll tear into this, this and this.' The courting method of Jaffar of the genuine, authentic Persia is admittedly brutal, but when the sultan's away, the grand viziers will play.

Well, the sultan's daughter didn't say yes, so the player, emulating a brave adventurer, has to rescue the princess within the hour. The errollflynn projected onto a bitmap jumps, runs, climbs and, sword in hand, skewers the vizier's guards. The game even gives the brain cells a bit of a workout, since every screen contains an easy problem along the lines of 'how do I get the door open?' Even fans of bloody deaths needn't walk away from the game empty-handed.

The plot is what it is, but the animation is first-class, as you'd rightly expect from the maker of Karateka. While working on the graphics, the author went through the genre's films and then some, and it shows. In the screenshot the hero doesn't look like much more than a simple lump of pixels, but once it gets moving, oh boy! the illusion is quite something.

The realism, though, hides a rather reviewer-dependent problem. The character, you see, reacts more slowly than in normal games precisely because of the realistic animation: it brakes after running and crouches before jumping. Although you don't need to touch the keyboard, every direction of the joystick, fire button included, is loaded with actions, so the game takes practice if the hero isn't to be lying skewered on spikes every moment. So POP is pretty difficult, although the patient player then gets their full money's worth of fun.

There's a classic blunder too. The hero is equipped with unlimited lives for the hour, but unfortunately always has to go back to the start of the level after dying. A more normal three lives and carrying on from where you died would have been a better option. But in spite of that, Prince of Persia is a nifty action adventure.
