Moonbase

Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

Moonbase

Wesson Internationalin Moonbase on erittäin mielenkiintoinen, sillä pelimalli on ilmiselvästi otettu SimCitystä.

Koska kaikki aseman ylläpitoon tarvittava tuodaan Maasta, on yritettävä pienentää juoksevia kuluja.

Peli sujuu aivan SimCityn tyyliin, vaikka palikoita on huomattavasti enemmän.

You, sir, blockhead that you are, have invested in a hotel, and now the price of liquid oxygen has crashed, there isn't enough electricity and there's no money to build new solar panels. Production is dropping, a lander has come crashing down on the greenhouses and the workers are threatening to strike. We're on the brink of bankruptcy, what do we do?"

"We'll make the bread half pine bark."

Wesson International's Moonbase is extremely interesting, because the game model has quite obviously been lifted from SimCity. The player has ten years to build a financially self-sufficient moon base before NASA's funding stops. Mind you, if the lunar laboratories come up with inventions of general benefit, then NASA will certainly pay up.

Once the Moon's surface has been given a preliminary survey, construction begins. Most of the lunar structures need both energy and cooling in order to work. The commander has to make sure that there is enough manpower and that they have plenty of room to live in. Otherwise there will be strikes and fights, which shows up in the production figures.

The moon base raises money by selling raw materials mined from the Moon, mainly helium and liquid oxygen, as well as refined products, whose prices vary with supply and demand. Extra money comes from building hotels, where the Earth yokels come to drink and raise hell. A lucky commander may even strike an ice field, and mining it cuts water costs considerably.

Since everything needed to keep the base running is shipped in from Earth, you have to try to cut the running costs. Maintenance hangars cut maintenance costs and greenhouses produce food, but on the other hand they need extra manpower, which needs space, food and money. There's all sorts of other useful junk to be had as well.

Every now and then some accident or other breaks the routine. War may break out on Earth, a disease may infect the greenhouses, a moon ship may slam into the ground or a factory may blow up, to name a few examples. As a piquant detail, let it be mentioned that a diligent explorer may stumble upon black monoliths...

The game plays just like SimCity, although there are considerably more building blocks.

Moonbase was made in cooperation with NASA, so there is presumably no reason to suspect a lack of expertise. I'll grumble this much, though: the moon base workers are a loyal lot - even when production is at zero, nobody packs up their stuff and heads back to Earth, never mind recruiting new workers ever being difficult. The game loses out to SimCity through a certain sloppiness: if you put ten fusion power plants to work keeping a little hut glowing, you can build a massive city at the other end of the map on the strength of a single solar panel. Likewise, it seems one cooler is plenty, as long as there's at least one. You also end up missing SimCity's assortment of charts.

In any case, Moonbase is a game very nearly on a par with SimCity, and in some respects even better, so buying space station Alfa is well worth it. Unlike in SimCity, you can't leave the moon base humming away on its own, raking in money. Warmly recommended.
