Mean Streets

1991 KevätNimi on pahasti harhaanjohtava, sillä Mean Streets ei ole mikään 'mätki pahat jätkät ketoon' -peli, vaan kovaksikeitetty dekkaritarina, jonka ympäristönä on vuoden 2033 San Francisco. Sankarin työnantajana on kuuluisan professorin tytär, joka epäilee isänsä itsemurhaan liittyvän tiettyjä hämäriä piirteitä.

Toteutus on mielenkiintoinen tyylien sekasotku.

Puheluissa onkin pelin hauskin yksityiskohta, sillä digitoitujen 'what's up Tex' ja 'I'll check it out' -hölinöiden lisäksi digitoiduista kuvista muokattuja kasvoja animoidaan erittäin aidosti.

Nexus).

Mean Streets on erikoinen yritys luoda aito film noir -henkinen dekkaritarina, jonka koossapitävänä voimana on johtolankojen hitaan varma vyyhdittyminen.

1991 KevätThe name is badly misleading, because Mean Streets is no 'knock the bad guys flat' game but a hardboiled detective story set in the San Francisco of 2033. The hero's employer is the daughter of a famous professor, who suspects there are certain shady aspects to her father's suicide.

The execution is an interesting hotchpotch of styles. Steering the hover car you get around in is like playing a vector-graphics flight sim, except that most of the time you can get by just by entering coordinates into the navigation unit, and then you simply sit back and admire the scenery. The time spent travelling can be put to good use by ringing your secretary Vanessa or your informant, the beautiful oriental Lee.

The phone calls are in fact where the game's most entertaining detail lies, because on top of the digitised 'what's up Tex' and 'I'll check it out' blather, faces worked up from digitised pictures are animated very convincingly. How useful your back-up actually is turns out to be a bit hit-and-miss, though: for example, if you ask both of them the same thing, you usually get exactly the same fax.

Once the hover car has arrived and is parked, what follows is one of three kinds of sequence, depending on the location. In the blocks set aside for bounty hunting, you just blast away at representatives of the underworld in the usual action style. Getting an audience with certain characters also means you first have to curb the rampaging of some over-eager riff-raff a little.

Questioning key characters has been done by slapping the mug of the person concerned onto the screen, while the hero draws up questions of the form 'what do you know about person or thing X', which can also be given extra punch with bribes or threats. The third and last of the interludes on offer involves searching for clues. You steer the hero around an apartment in the style of graphic adventure games and sniff the place over from floor to ceiling, as any decent detective should.

None of the game's sub-sections is all that exciting in itself, but the grimly futuristic cyberpunk setting goes a long way towards adding interest. The source of inspiration has clearly been Bladerunner, as you can tell from subtle references such as the hover cars and familiar names (e.g. Nexus).

Mean Streets is an unusual attempt to create a genuine film noir-style detective story, whose binding force is the slow but sure way the threads of the clues wind together. A bit more game and a bit less slide show, and the end result would be superb.
