Continental Circus

Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

Continental Circus

Syvästi vihaamani Teque on saanut aikaan kohtalaisen kelvollista jälkeä. Vauhtia ja fiilistä on aivan tarpeeksi ja poikkeuksellisesti auto jopa näyttää liikkuvan huimat liki 400 kilometriä tunnissa, mitä nopeusmittari ilmoittaa. Maiseman vieritys on toteutettu erinomaisesti ja luo vauhdin tuntua paljon paremmin kuin monet muut autopelit.

Ai mitäkö pelissä tehdään? No, siinä ajetaan autolla.

1990 KevätDriving games and coin-op conversions were the hottest buzzwords of the Christmas games market. Combine the two, and shouldn't the end result be a REALLY big hit? Not necessarily, as Virgin's Continental Circus demonstrates.

In the arcades the game was called Continental Circus (based on a translation error, it was supposed to be Circuit), and you squeezed yourself into it as if into a real Formula car. A sort of visor was slapped over your eyes, and through it the game looked three-dimensional. The effect wasn't all that successful, mind you, so it's entirely fitting that nobody even set out to attempt that kind of trick on the home machines.

Teque, whom I loathe deeply, has turned out reasonably decent work. There's plenty of speed and feel, and for once the car even looks like it's doing the dizzying nearly 400 kilometres per hour the speedometer claims. The scrolling of the scenery is excellently done and creates a sense of speed much better than many other driving games.

Oh, what do you do in the game? Well, you drive a car. A Formula car, that is, and the aim is to slip a metal rocket wobbling on four wheels all of twenty-odd notches up the results table, until the player is sitting on the winner's podium. In neither version is this particularly easy. The track seems to be far too narrow, or else all the cars are too wide. Anyway, the game starts off fairly easy, but then gets harder all too quickly.

Graphically both versions make fairly moderate use of their host machines, but there's no point expecting anything massively jaw-dropping. The audio side doesn't startle anyone either. The playability is quite all right; the car does go where you steer it, so if the game isn't going smoothly the fault lies with the player. The difficulty ramping up far too fast, and the frustration that follows, do kick any idle urge to play to the kerb for good, though.

If you're looking for a fun driving game, you'd do well to consider Chase H.Q. or Turbo OutRun. This isn't a bad game, but there are better games to spend your money on too.
