Life & Death II: The Brain
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

Suuri apu on muun muuassa on-line-neurokirurgian oppikirjasta.
1991 KevätThe patient lies on the operating table with a shaved head. Surgeon Nirvi yanks on the rubber gloves, slashes a Z into the crown of the head with the scalpel and yanks the scalp open. Three quarters of the operation's audience suddenly think of something better to do and miss the sensational hole-in-the-skull-eyes-shut number. Suction on, tumour out and skull shut, and yet another patient can fall at the feet of velvet-eyed star surgeon Nirvi.
Which is by no means how brain surgery goes, as you can see for yourself in the excellent Life & Death II. First you have to diagnose the patient (70-year-old grannies who do drugs, heh.) A big help comes from, among other things, the on-line neurosurgery textbook. The patient gets prodded with needles, among other things, and when you jab a needle into their eye, all you get is a telling-off, and you keep your job. Suspicious. I think I'll cancel my Monday appointment.
At the start, a lot of the patients need nothing more than aspirin, a psychiatrist and a good swift kick up the backside, but sooner or later you'll have to operate, so you'd better pay a visit to the classroom and take proper notes, or things will go badly for patient and doctor alike. The 256-colour VGA graphics make sure that in the operating theatre you go white as a sheet and your breakfast goes looking for the exit.
Software Toolworks have improved the sequel tremendously: the wretched CGA graphics and beeping have been replaced with VGA and sound card support, and even the PC beeper plays the sampled effects excellently.
Life & Death II is a successful and well-made surgery simulation that offers a "pleasant" change from the formula games you've seen a thousand times.
