International Soccer Challenge
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

Hyvä näinkin, sillä jo potkujen suuntaamisessa on aivan kylliksi hommaa.
1991 KevätWith the World Cup the supply of hooligan games grows remarkably, and this time too they've been dumped on the market like penalties in championship clashes. Naturally Prose had to get its football boot in the soup as well by developing a sequel to Microprose Soccer, or at least that's how ISC is being advertised.
For a change, a footy game with a fresh angle, namely from close to the surface of the grass and in three-D. The view, shot from your own half, follows either the ball or the player you control, depending on which is nearer your own goal. When attacking the system works fairly well, but less well when defending, because the positions of the players lower down have to be sleuthed out from the small overhead view on the panel. Really the pitch ought to swivel round to follow your line of sight, so that playing downwards, for example, would go more smoothly.
The other critical point in the implementation is the smoothness of the half-vector graphics, since it doesn't take much juddering before the playability starts to suffer. It isn't actually slow as such, but a slight stickiness in the feel of the controls is bothersome.
If we forget the problems that 3D brings with it, ISC is a pretty comprehensive take on footballing. Throw-ins are included, as are goal kicks, free kicks, corners and penalties. The last of those is the only situation where you may have to take on goalie duties; otherwise he handles things under his own steam. Just as well, because aiming the kicks is quite enough work already. The principle is that first you set the power with the button and then you have a split second to decide whether to kick low, high or perhaps with swerve. The lack of heading is a bit puzzling, since it would have suited the game's down-to-earth viewpoint unusually well. There are no fancy tactical patterns to be found in the game.
As far as I'm concerned, one good football game would have done for a while. Prose's realism-chasing vision doesn't work well enough to replace the likes of Kick Off 2. Try it and marvel at how much a change of angle really counts for. Football fans will naturally leave the local game shop needing a refit if the game isn't on the shelf.
