Microprose Soccer

Jalkapallo lienee kaikille tuttu laji.

Muista peleistä poiketen on pelialue kuvattu suoraan ylhäältä.

Pikku miinus: pelin tiimellyksessä on joskus vaikea erottaa, kumpi pelaajista on kumpi.

1989 KevätAaaaand a beautiful pass from the midfielder to the centre forward, who drives powerfully towards the opposition's penalty area. The goalkeeper sees the danger and rushes out, narrowing the possible shooting angle at the same time. But just before contact the striker lightly chips under the ball, lifting it out of the keeper's reach, goes round the dumbfounded keeper and, with almost childish ease, buries the leather in the back of the net. The crowd cheers and so do I, because this is the best footie game on the C64!

Football is presumably a sport everyone knows. Converting it to the computer isn't the hardest thing in the world, but it isn't the easiest either. Sensible Software have succeeded absolutely brilliantly and crammed a huge amount of stuff into the C-64's tiny memory space.

From the very first menu, the player is fawned over with user-friendliness and a wealth of options. You can adjust the match length, the kit colours, the strength of the swerve shots (yes, a wicked bender will fool even the best of goalkeepers), the weather (sliding tackles on a wet pitch produce hilarious results) and many other things.

The graphics are a caress for the eyeballs, and the game even finds room for a choice between a colour and a black-and-white version, in case all you have is a black-and-white TV. Unlike other games, the pitch is shown from directly above.

A small minus: in the thick of the game it's sometimes hard to tell which of the two players is which. If that sounds confusing, well, dang it, sometimes it is.

Martin Galway, the Sensible team's new member, hasn't exactly stretched to the limit; in fact, you'll happily switch the music off. The effects during play are nothing to complain about. Playability is what decides it, though, and in that department MicroSoccer shines. The many kinds of kick, and the control system that changes with the direction you're running in, can be learned passably after a few games, and quickly as experience builds.

As things stand, MicroSoccer has no rival. The near future will probably show whether Emlyn Hughes's International Football has what it takes to be a challenger.
