Future Basketball

Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

Future Basketball

Ohjauksen palattua alkuperäiseen on vastustaja tietysti ehtinyt kääntää hyökkääjälle selkänsä.

1991 KevätWhen it comes to futuristic sport, you can be pretty sure the game has borrowed a few ideas from Speedball. So too with Future Basketball, where the goals have been replaced with baskets, but otherwise the ingredients of the matches are the familiar shoving of players and collecting of icons off the court surface. The aids include some decidedly unsporting kit, such as circular saw blades that home in on the opponent.

Oddly enough FB lacks a two-player mode, but that is at least partly made up for by an interesting league system with three divisions and a super league. The idea is that the money you rake in from wins can be invested in better players. Renewing the squad is certainly necessary, since at the start of the league you have to put up with slow-moving butterfingers who haven't mastered even the basics of shooting baskets and passing. Assembling a top squad doesn't happen in a flash, so the option to save your position to disk is a much-needed feature.

The game system as such is clear and smooth, but a couple of blunders spoil the enjoyment. For example, when one of your players is shoved over, he stays lying on the ground for a while. That is part of the nature of the game, but the downside is that if the eliminated player is the one nearest the ball, you can't do a thing for a while.

The defensive play limps along even worse. The man you control is always the one nearest the ball, but the automatic switching doesn't work the way it should. If two defenders are at roughly the same distance, control flips from one player to the other at a rapid tempo. It's really infuriating when control switches to the wrong man just as you're lining up a tackle. By the time control returns to the original one, the opponent has of course had time to turn his back on the attacker. And so you've handily managed to clear your own half of the court, and the opponent scores a basket.

FB manages to entertain surprisingly well, even though the game system's muddles do cause mild frustration. But in the futuristic games class Projectyle is better in my opinion, and Speedball 2 probably squeezes ahead of it on the shopping list too.
