Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. 1991 KevätShakkiohjelmissa riittää valinnanvaraa, mutta helpoksi valintaa ei ole tehty, sillä Infogramesin Chess Simulator on ties kuinka mones yrittäjä, jonka pakkauksessa komeilee teksti 'voittanut sen ja sen turnauksen silloin ja silloin'.
Ulkoisesti CS vaikuttaa poikkeuksellisen siistiltä, mutta asiallisen ensivaikutelman lievästi pilaa huvittava ranskalaisittain murtava puhesynteesi. Päällimmäisin valittamisen aihe on sama kuin useimmissa shakeissa. Kaikki suunnittelijat eivät näköjään vieläkään ole saaneet mahtumaan paksuun kalloonsa, ettei nappulan siirtämistä saa tehdä siten, että hiiri nappaisee sen mukaansa, sillä nappuloiden vetäminen lautaa pitkin muuttaa osoittimen kankeaksi.
CS:n valikot eivät läheskään vedä vertoja Chess Masterin ylellisyydelle, mutta kaikki olennainen tuntuu löytyvän. Tärkeimpänä on tietysti vaikeustason säätö muuttamalla sallittua miettimisaikaa. Mahdollista on myös valita heikennetty tai täydellä tykistöllä jyräävä pelialgoritmi. Kehittyneimpiin ominaisuuksiin kuuluu avauskirjaston laajentaminen ja ELO-vahvuuden mittaus, mitkä näyttävät löytyvän useimmista uuden sukupolven shakeista. Ainoa selvä puute on ohjelman kyvyttömyys ratkaista erityyppisiä shakkitehtäviä.
Yhtä CS:n piirrettä en oikein ymmärrä. Nimittäin sen on ohjelmoinut Oxford Softworks, joka äskettäin tuupasi markkinoille oman shakkiohjelman Chess Champion 2175. Lähempi tarkastelu osoittaakin, että Chess Simulator on käytännössä sama ohjelma eri kuorissa. Edes pelivahvuudessa ei ole havaittavaa parannusta. Mukana ovat jopa tutut 3D-näytöt vaihtoehtoisilla nappulaseteillä, tosin nallekarhut on vain vaihdettu afrikkalaiseen veistotaiteeseen. Ohjelmasta pois tiputettujen ominaisuuksien joukossa on puolestaan intuitiivinen hiiriohjaus, joka olisi karsinut pois kaiken turhan hiirellä klikkailun ja nappuloiden tuuppimisen.
CS on erinomainen shakkiohjelma, mutta valinta on todella vaikea, jos hyllystä löytyy myös Chess Champion 2175. Siinä on piirun verran enemmän käyttäjäystävällisyyttä, mutta toisaalta CS:ssa saataa olla vaikeasti havaittavia parannuksia. Parasta hylätä molemmat ja ostaa Chess Master 2100.
1991 KevätThere's no shortage of choice among chess programs, but nobody has made the choosing easy, since Infogrames' Chess Simulator is the umpteenth contender with the words 'winner of such-and-such tournament at such-and-such time' emblazoned on its box.
On the outside CS looks exceptionally neat, but the businesslike first impression is slightly spoiled by a comical speech synthesizer with a French accent. The number one complaint is the same as with most chess games. Apparently not every designer has yet managed to get it into their thick skull that moving a piece must not work by having the mouse snatch it up and drag it along, because dragging pieces across the board makes the pointer sluggish.
CS's menus come nowhere near the luxury of Chess Master, but everything essential seems to be there. The most important, of course, is adjusting the difficulty level by changing the permitted thinking time. You can also choose between a weakened playing algorithm and one that steamrollers you with its full artillery. The more advanced features include expanding the opening library and measuring ELO strength, which seem to be found in most of the new generation of chess games. The only clear shortcoming is the program's inability to solve chess problems of various kinds.
There's one feature of CS I don't really understand. You see, it was programmed by Oxford Softworks, who recently shoved their own chess program, Chess Champion 2175, onto the market. And a closer look does show that Chess Simulator is practically the same program in a different wrapper. There isn't even any noticeable improvement in playing strength. It even includes the familiar 3D displays with alternative piece sets, although the teddy bears have simply been swapped for African sculpture. Among the features dropped from the program, on the other hand, is the intuitive mouse control, which would have cut out all the pointless clicking of the mouse and shoving of pieces.
CS is an excellent chess program, but the choice is a really tough one if the shelf also holds Chess Champion 2175. That one has a hair more user-friendliness, but on the other hand CS may contain improvements that are hard to spot. Best to reject both and buy Chess Master 2100.
