1988Tässä pelissä olet valkoinen kuningas. Sinulla on komennossasi symboolinen sotajoukko ja tavoitteesi on lyödä Mustan kuninkaan sotajoukot. Pelin idea on selvästi kopioitu Archonista, sen verran yhteistä näillä kahdella pelillä on.

Sotavoimat koostuvat seuraavista yksiköistä: moukat, tornit, ratsut, lähetit, kuningatar ja kuningas. Moukkia on kahdeksan, muita kaksi.

"Shakki", josta pelikin on saanut nimensä, on taas tilanne jossa kuningasta uhataan.

1988In this game you are the white king. You have a symbolic army under your command, and your goal is to defeat the armies of the Black king. The idea of the game has clearly been copied from Archon, that's how much these two games have in common.

The armed forces consist of the following units: pawns, rooks, knights, bishops, a queen and a king. There are eight pawns and two of each of the others. The exception, of course, is the king and the queen, of which there is only one. Each unit type moves differently and a different number of squares, and if a piece moves onto a square containing an opponent's piece, it can "eat" it.

A horrifically brutal way to settle disagreements!

The goal is not, as you might imagine, the complete destruction of the opponent's troops, but getting the opponent's king into a position where he cannot move without being eaten. This is called "Mate". "Check", which the game takes its name from, is on the other hand a situation where the king is threatened.

Unfortunately chess does not include any brisk shooting, or even real-time movement; instead each side moves its pieces in turn. As a result the game is rather slow-paced and will appeal at most to a few strategy types.

As with Pacman, the first chess game has been followed by numerous clones, of which this Chessmaster would seem to be right up there with the very best. There are lots of different options, and a whole disk's worth of game library comes along too. The graphics are good, but the lack of animation has to be marked down. Oh boy, what they could have made these eating scenes look like! As consolation, the Amiga and ST versions do at least talk.

All in all, this "chess" seems to be such a slow-paced game that the whole genre is hardly likely ever to achieve any great popularity. The best way to play the game in question is still with a ruler and lots of rubber bands for shooting the pieces. This, in fact, is the only game option Chessmaster lacks.
