Battlechess
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1989 KevätMissä valkoinen aloittaa aina (paitsi Etelä-Afrikassa)? No shakissapa tietenkin.
Kuten me kaikki tiedämme pohjautuu Battlechess tunnettuun lautapeliin, jonka nykyinen maailmanmestari on Garri "Gasp!"Arov. Shakin säännöt selviävät "Maailman uskonnot" -kirjasta, joten keskitytäänpä tähän uusimpaan versioon.
Esitin joskus vaatimattoman toivomuksen shakista, jossa syöminen (tarkoittaa nappulan poistamista laudalta) olisi animoitu.
1989 KevätWhere does white always go first (apart from South Africa)? Why, in chess, of course. For hundreds of years the sacred rituals of this game have proudly defied all change, heads held high. Until now. Now Interplay, familiar from the Bard's Tales, is quite literally bringing chess to life, and bringing sex, humour and violence along with it.
As we all know, Battlechess is based on a well-known board game whose current world champion is Garri "Gasp!"Arov. The rules of chess can be found in the book "World Religions", so let's concentrate on this latest version.
I once expressed a modest wish for a chess game in which capturing (meaning removing a piece from the board) would be animated. Apparently Interplay reads C=lehti too. Every piece is superbly animated, and when two pieces meet, a nice fight follows. By way of example, take the meeting of two horses (knight in English), where the winner hacks off all of the loser's limbs, one at a time, just like in the film "Monty Python & Holy Grail". There's another four megabytes' worth of animation, so the examples stop here.
The graphics are really, really good, and the digitised effects give an extra boost on top. The death of a piece, and the way it's dealt out, always change depending on which pieces meet, so there's a very commendable number of dramatic death scenes. Word has it Battlechess also plays well, so the fun isn't limited to just enjoying the show. Those who take chess seriously can switch the screen to a normal lifeless two-dimensional board if the sacrilege becomes unbearable.
The only thing that puzzles me is who Battlechess is aimed at. People who don't play chess will play a few rounds under the spell of the graphics, but chess is chess even if you fry it in graphics. The Check-Mates, on the other hand, will be incensed at humour being mixed into their sacred hobby, and this boy isn't giving up noughts and crosses, but thanks to everyone who wrote in about the Chessmaster review.
