Buck Rogers - Countdown to Doomsday
Pelit was a Finnish-language (bi)annual book series published from 1987 to 1991 containing gaming-related articles, tips and most importantly game reviews. Here you can find all the reviews from the books. The reviews were originally written in Finnish; the English versions are translations of the Finnish originals.

1991 SyksyBuck Rogers - Countdown to Doomsday

1991 KevätMaapallo on rappiolla. Vain Buck Rogersin johtama New Earth Organization seisoo tuhon välissä.
Buck Rogers perustuu TSR:n uuteen roolipeliin SSI:n tietokonenäkemyksenä.
Karkeasti ottaen Buck Rogers on kopio AD&D-peleistä. Samalla lailla rymytään pääasiassa 3D-käytävissä välillä liikaa, välillä liian vähän taistellen. Mies miestä vastaan -rähinä on suora klooni AD&D-peleistä, eroina nollapainovoimasta sakotus avaruudessa sekä taistelun painottuminen suuremman kantomatkan omaaviin aseisiin. Tai'at korvaa valikoima kranaatteja.
1991 KevätThe Earth is in decline. Whatever pollution and overpopulation haven't destroyed, the Russo-American Mercantile, or RAM, is trying to finish off. Only the New Earth Organization, led by Buck Rogers, stands in the way of destruction.
Buck Rogers is SSI's computer take on TSR's new role-playing game. The first thing to smack you in the face is screen after screen of different abilities that you have to put points into. It's worth poring over the manual, since some of the skills are vital, some this game never uses and some it uses once or twice. There are a few races, and these can then become warriors, pilots, engineers, medical staff and rogues.
Roughly speaking, Buck Rogers is a copy of the AD&D games. In the same way you blunder about mainly in 3D corridors, sometimes fighting too much, sometimes too little. The man-against-man brawling is a straight clone of the AD&D games, the differences being penalties for zero gravity in space and combat leaning towards longer-range weapons. Spells are replaced by an assortment of grenades.
This being a SciFi game, spaceships clash too. And this is the weakest link in the whole game. Naturally you never actually see the enemy ship, so your options shrink to closing-or-opening the distance, shooting and, once close enough, ram-or-board options. A considerably more tactical approach would have been welcome. Mind you, BR isn't exactly a thorny tangle of problems in any other respect either.
The graphical differences between the PC and the C-64 don't affect the playability; on the C-64 there's of course that familiar disk flipping.
Buck Rogers is quite enjoyable to play, but this business of releasing the same game under a different name is starting to get on my nerves, especially when they can't even be bothered to improve the system significantly.
