1987Kolikkopeliautomaateissa klassikoksi muodostunut Buck Rogers julkaistiin viime vuonna kuusneloselle. Nyt sankari on herätetty henkiin MSX-mikroissa.
Buck Rogersissa pelaaja tutkii avaruusaluksellaan vastalöydettyä planeettarykelmää. Ensimmäisellä planeetalla on sähköpylväitä, joiden välistä on lennettävä. Kun tarpeeksi monen pylvään välistä on lennetty, päästään seuraavaan vaiheeseen, jossa planeetalle ilmestyy vieraita lentäviä lautasmiinoja. Niitä voi joko väistellä tai ammuskella, jolloin saa pisteitä.
Kolmannessa vaiheessa vastaan tulee hyppiviä avaruusolioita. Niitäkin ammuskelemalla pistetili karttuu. On kuitenkin muistettava, että pistetilin kartuttaminen ei ole tärkein tehtävä vaan sähköpylväiden välistä lentely, jotta annettu tehtävä tulisi suoritetuksi. Kolmannen vaiheen jälkeen siirrytään avaruuteen, jossa vastassa on avaruusmiinojen lisäksi niiden emäalus, joka on tuhottava. Jos selviät tästä, etenet seuraavalle planeetalle, jossa vastus on edellistä kovempi.
Pelin grafiikka on todella sujuvaa ja lentämiseen on saatu kolmiulotteisuuden tuntua. MSX:n Buck Rogers on grafiikaltaan jopa parempi kuin kuusnelosen vastaava. Peli näyttää suuntaa, mihin MSX-mikrojen peligrafiikassa pitää mennä.
Ääni on kärsinyt grafiikan kustannuksella ja on jäänyt varsin vaatimattomaksi.
Alusta voi ohjata joko peliohjaimella tai näppäimistöllä. Pelituntuma on varsinkin peliohjaimella hyvä. Näppäimistöllä on helppo aluksi painaa väärää ohjausnäppäintä, mutta melko nopeasti näppäimistölläkin pelaaminen alkaa sujua.
MSX-mikroilla pelin lataaminen kasetilta on esim. kuusnelosta kätevämpää. Kuvaruudulla on nähtävissä lataustiedot ja niille voidaan Spectrumin tapaan piirtää kuva latauksen ajaksi. Lisäksi ainakin tämä peli oli tallennettu kasetin eri puolille eri nopeuksilla; 1200 baudia huonolle ja 2400 baudia hyvälle kasettinauhurille.
Kaikenkaikkiaan peli on klassisena avaruuspelinä lajinsa parhaita. Buck Rogers on suositeltava ostos kaikille tämän tyyppisistä peleistä pitäville.
1987Buck Rogers, which became a classic in the arcades, was released for the Commodore 64 last year. Now the hero has been brought back to life on MSX micros.
In Buck Rogers the player explores a newly discovered cluster of planets in a spaceship. The first planet has electric pylons that you must fly between. Once you have flown between enough pylons, you move on to the next stage, where alien flying-saucer mines appear on the planet. You can either dodge them or shoot at them, which earns you points.
In the third stage you come up against hopping space aliens. Shooting them racks up your score too. You must remember, though, that building up your score is not the main task; flying between the electric pylons is, so that the assigned mission gets completed. After the third stage you move out into space, where besides the space mines you face their mothership, which must be destroyed. If you survive this, you advance to the next planet, where the opposition is tougher than on the last.
The game's graphics are really smooth, and the flying has been given a sense of three dimensions. Graphically, the MSX Buck Rogers is even better than its Commodore 64 counterpart. The game shows the direction MSX game graphics ought to be heading in.
The sound has suffered at the expense of the graphics and has ended up rather modest.
The ship can be steered with either a joystick or the keyboard. The game feels good, especially with a joystick. On the keyboard it is easy at first to press the wrong control key, but fairly quickly playing on the keyboard starts to go smoothly too.
On MSX micros, loading a game from tape is handier than on, say, the Commodore 64. The loading details are shown on screen, and, Spectrum-style, a picture can be drawn there for the duration of the load. What's more, this game at least had been recorded on the two sides of the tape at different speeds: 1200 baud for a poor cassette recorder and 2400 baud for a good one.
All in all, as a classic space game it is one of the best of its kind. Buck Rogers is a recommended purchase for everyone who likes this type of game.
